Operation Smash & Grab Recap

Operation Smash & Grab: Cracking Down on Organized Retail Crime

The shopping experience at retail stores has changed in recent times due to organized retail crime. Many products that once sat openly on store shelves are now shielded behind security glass or secured on hang bars. You may also have noticed an increase in security presence in most retail stores. A recent study conducted by the National Retail Federation indicated that retail stores reported $112.1 billion in losses in 2022, a surge from $93.9 billion in 2021.

This past November, Sheriff Shannon Dicus was focused on combating this issue with the launch of Operation Smash & Grab. The goal was to increase enforcement efforts through proactive and undercover law enforcement operations in commercial retail stores.

The operation was supported by San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson. D.A. Anderson stated in part, "Our office remains focused on ensuring the safety of our community and businesses. By working together with law enforcement and businesses across the county, we will seek prosecution and accountability for individuals who choose to engage in unlawful behavior such as retail theft crimes, buying or selling stolen property, or organized crime schemes at multiple locations."

The operation ran from November 24, 2023, to December 21, 2023. Investigators made over 200 arrests and recovered nearly $53,000 in stolen property. Through these investigations, they also recovered concealed weapons and illegal narcotics during some of these arrests. The operation's success was attributed to the extraordinary efforts of our deputies and strong partnerships with local retailers.
