Juvenile Intervention Program (J.I.P.) Helps Troubled Teens See Reality of Incarceration

After seeing an increase in juvenile delinquency rates, San Bernardino County has introduced the Juvenile Intervention Program (J.I.P.) to help troubled teens understand the realities of incarceration. The program was created in 2001 at the request of community leaders, and since 2004, thousands of juveniles have participated in J.I.P.
A common misconception among young people is that life in jail is glamorous. This idea is often delivered through television shows or influenced by friends and family members who have been through the criminal justice system. The J.I.P. was designed to provide intervention for juveniles who have begun to engage in negative behaviors, such as alcohol, drugs, gangs, or violence, and to show them the actual consequences of their actions.
CRITERIA
The program is not for all juveniles, and families must meet specific participation criteria. Families must reside in San Bernardino County, children must be between 13-17 years of age, and they must not have been to Juvenile Hall or have any ongoing criminal proceedings. The participant must also have a parent or legal guardian capable and willing to attend.
AGENDA
During the program, juveniles are exposed to the realities of jail life and are taken to the Coroner’s Division to see the facts of death. Parents and guardians are also provided with information on various topics, such as parenting styles, communication, drug and alcohol recognition, gang awareness, and various teenage problems.
BENEFITS
One of the program's key benefits is reduced crime within neighborhoods and schools and decreased court caseloads, resulting in fewer court costs. Families also obtain law enforcement support, additional resources, and improved communication. Juveniles experience and learn the consequences of delinquent behavior and are encouraged to become better community members.
Follow-ups with previous J.I.P. participants have revealed that many became productive members of society. The program collaborates with law enforcement, the community, and schools, increasing understanding and awareness of the criminal justice system.
The J.I.P. is a valuable resource for families in San Bernardino County who need intervention in their child's life. The program aims to educate families, reduce delinquent behavior, and create a safer community for all residents.
