The Exmoor Society Big Nature Day is a family-friendly celebration of Exmoor’s landscapes and wildlife. Taking place at Nettlecombe Court, the event will bring together creative workshops, guided nature walks, live performances, food, stalls, interactive arts and talks from environmentalists.

A key theme for the day is ‘nature for all’, with a wide range of national and local organisations taking part to encourage more people to explore and feel at home in the natural world. The event will also serve as the concluding celebration of the Exmoor Nature Festival.

The Somerset Conference of the Trees will be a celebration of our trees and woodlands. Some of our most influential environmentalists will be giving their views on subject including forest spirituality, woodland ecology, rewilding and the importance of our trees for therapy, timber and climate change. Guest speakers include Ben Goldsmith host of Rewilding the World, Merlin Sheldrake author of Entangled World and Emma Fitchett tree spiritualist and shamanic teacher.

The conference will be based in a mature woodland where workshops will include ecological surveys, the use of timber in architectural design and connecting with the spirits of trees. Please book a place in advance and join us on 12 June.

Bioblitz – with Transition Town Wellington: Part 1

This family-friendly bioblitz at Fox’s Field invites people to explore local wildlife with the help of experts, ecologists and keen amateurs. Running through the afternoon and evening, it offers the chance to spot and record as many species as possible in a shared citizen science effort.

Each 45-minute session focuses on different plants and creatures, including butterflies, moths, bats, birds and other invertebrates. Participants can use the iNaturalist app to log sightings, or simply come along to listen, learn and enjoy time in nature.

Bioblitz – with Transition Town Wellington: Part 2

The second part of the bioblitz continues early on Sunday morning, giving people another chance to discover the wildlife of Fox’s Field. The session offers a different perspective on the site, with opportunities to spot and record species active at the start of the day.

Like Part 1, the event forms part of a wider citizen science effort to help monitor local biodiversity and build a clearer picture of the species living in and around Wellington’s green spaces.

The Green Scythe Fair

The Green Scythe Fair is a volunteer-run environmental fair on the Somerset Levels, powered by wind, sun and muscle. Expect live music, over 100 stalls showcasing traditional skills, crafts and produce, plus debates and talks, a big kids’ area, and plenty of organic local food, ales and ciders.

Sunday includes the West Country Scythe Championship, known for its impressive (and often entertaining) feats of haymaking by scythers from far and wide. If you want to learn scything or pick up a new rural craft skill, there are workshops and courses on Saturday, with details and booking on the ticketing site.

Ticket purchases include a mileage fee to support local tree planting and woodland restoration.

The Big Count 2026

Somerset Wildlife Trust’s annual Big Count invites people across the county to head outside and record the wildlife they spot in gardens, parks and community green spaces. The citizen science event, run in partnership with the Somerset Environmental Records Centre, helps build a clearer picture of local species and how they are changing over time.

No specialist knowledge is needed, and observations can be submitted using the iNaturalist app or a paper recording form. The event is open to all ages, with families, schools and community groups encouraged to take part.
