Is your sister-in-law a relative?

The answer is, it depends!

The definition of a relative in ORS 244.020(16) includes a public official's:

  • Spouse
  • Parent, Stepparent
  • Sibling, Stepsibling
  • Child
  • Daughter-in-law, Son-in-law
  • Spouse's family

So if she is your spouse's sibling, then she would be considered your relative. However, if she is married to your sibling, she would not meet the definition of relative under the law.
