Last month, I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with Mary, our Landlord and Compliance Specialist, following some of her duties as a Housing Compliance Case Manager.
We began our afternoon by tending to the maintenance of the life-saving defibrillator machines strategically placed throughout our community. Recognising their crucial importance, we thoroughly cleaned the boxes, checked and lubricated the locks, assessed the condition of the pads, and ensured the batteries were fully charged. Whilst we hope we'll never need to use one, the knowledge that these machines are available and well-maintained provides great comfort and peace of mind.
Inside the meeting halls, we turned our attention to the comprehensive inspection of safety measures. Our first priority was ensuring that all essential documentation was in place, crucial not only for organisational purposes but also for the fire service in the event of an emergency. We methodically checked the operation of all water points to minimise the risk of legionella and meticulously inspected fire doors for proper functionality, removing any potential obstructions. To ensure the safety of occupants, we diligently tested the alarm and lifeline equipment, leaving no stone unturned. In addition, we proactively reported any necessary repairs, leaving the halls in pristine condition.
Our next stop took us to a nearby residential block, where we embraced the use of an innovative new app that streamlined our work and provided an excellent audit trail. We examined the fire doors within the building and identified one with damage that required attention. Moreover, we discovered fire risks under the stairwell and in the electric cupboard, promptly reporting them to the relevant teams for action. Through our meticulous inspections and reporting, we strive to create a safer environment for all residents.
This brief glimpse into a housing compliance case manager’s work merely scratches the surface of the vast responsibilities shouldered by our dedicated compliance team. Nevertheless, it underscores the vital role they play in safeguarding residents from a multitude of potential dangers. Since the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, the importance of this work has come into sharp focus. If you are passionate about making a tangible impact in this crucial area, I encourage you to keep a close eye on our job pages as two positions within the team will soon become available.
At Somerset Council, we recognise the immense value of individuals like Mary, who diligently ensures compliance and prioritises the safety of our community. Their unwavering commitment and meticulous attention to detail make a world of difference.
