Note: When TSET references tobacco in this bulletin, we are referring to commercial tobacco and not the sacred and traditional use of tobacco by some American Indian communities.
Helpline Mom NRT
This May, we are "all aboard" for a tobacco-free summer with a limited time offer! Plus, check out tons of free resources.

A Slew of Seasonal Resources Await

Something to consider during the nicest weather weeks of Oklahoma's late spring and early summer months comes from someone who knew the importance of positivity and persistence in the face of adversity. “Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows,” said Helen Keller.

With summer just around the corner, TSET health communication brands are sharing resources, tools and tips to make this summer fun, healthy and tobacco-free.

Starting May 1 and running through June 30, the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline is offering Oklahomans who sign up at least eight weeks of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges. Typically, registrants are offered two weeks of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) when they register for coaching calls.

In addition to Mother's Day, May brings us National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, but you don’t have to be a top athlete to join the fun. TSET Better Health Podcast explores how kids and families can get more exercise - and fun - this month.

Plus, check out our summer spotlight highlighting free materials available to grantees through the TSET Fulfillment Center. Scroll down to see what's in store for May!

Fulfillment Center Summer Spotlight

The peeler is branded with the Shape Your Future logo on one side.

This is a helpful tool to get people cooking with a good reminder to find healthy recipes at Shape Your Future.

 MLMQ Mints

Sugar-Free Breath Mints

This small pack of mints features round white sugar-free peppermint breath mints. These mints are a perfect reminder of one of the benefits of quitting tobacco — fresher breath. These are also a good replacement for tobacco users during a craving while trying to quit.

These mints are a great way to share information about the free My Life My Quit (MLMQ) resources available to teens 13-17 to get help quitting tobacco including vaping. Great as a leave behind for discussions/presentation about vaping at high schools or other community engagements.

Healthy Meal Placemats

These Shape Your Future placemats are most often used by teachers, children’s civic/social groups and church groups. Kids love drawing their own healthy meal, while learning about portion size and how to rethink their drink.

These placemats are an inexpensive, yet effective item for teachers and other organizations that deal with kids daily.

Schools and cafeterias – and even restaurants serving healthy options – can use these to decorate hallways and dining areas with challenges to fill half your plate with fruit and veggies.

Tobacco Stops With Me

New Blog Explains the Not-So-Sweet Tricks Big Tobacco Uses

As the dangers of traditional tobacco become well-known and well-regulated, tobacco companies are finding new ways to hook a new generation of customers: flavored tobacco and nicotine products. Despite a ban of certain vapes in 2020, many other flavored products such as filtered cigars, disposable e-cigarettes, menthols and other alternative-nicotine products have made their way into stores and into the hands of minors. Learn how Big Tobacco is pulling the strings.

Tobacco Prevention

  • Quit the Hit, the popular cessation group, re-opened enrollment at the end of March. We have 236 total registrations of 13-24 year-olds as of April 17. It's exciting that we were able to activate a second enrollment period before the end of FY23!

  Quit the Hit

  • Down and Dirty’s latest message package, “No Fix for Dip,” is live through mid-May. Watch the ad now!
  • Tobacco Message Testing Report
    • We learned a lot in our latest report after talking with Oklahoma teens about tobacco messaging, including:
      • Showing the effects of vaping that are relevant to teens resonated well. Short-term physical effects, discomfort or disappointing friends, and financial strain were all compelling messaging areas that allowed important facts to shine.
      • Credible facts presented in a ‘science-forward’ way, such as including specific chemical names and how they interfere with biological mechanisms are well liked.
      • Anything perceived as ‘scare tactics’ can quickly feel overdone - teens liked when messaging was well-balanced. Teens are used to seeing other prevention and anti-vaping messages that feature fear appeals and can dismiss messages that only convey “vaping is scary”.

Nutrition

  • New nutritional message packages will be filmed in May. We have three concepts with both a rural and urban version in pre-production phase right now. Keep an eye out next month for an inside look at the production work!
