Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary Training Programs

Did you know that Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) education programs are overseen by the Dental Quality Assurance Commission (DQAC or commission)? To qualify for an EFDA license in Washington State, all applicants must show completion of a commission-approved EFDA education program. You can find more license details and requirements in RCW 18.260.050.

Before the commission approves an EFDA program, a program applicant must complete an application and submit any additional materials that the commission deems necessary.

What happens after an education program has applied?

The EFDA committee, which currently consists of four Dental Quality Assurance Commission members, will review the application. The committee will coordinate dates and times for a site review to be conducted.

What does DQAC look for when conducting its site reviews?

DQAC looks at the six main criteria highlighted in the program application:

  1. program effectiveness
  2. education program
  3. administration, faculty, and staff
  4. educational support services
  5. health and safety provisions
  6. quality of patient services

How long does it take for my program to be given results after a site review?

The reviewing committee will report findings to DQAC at the following business meeting, where the commission will vote to either deny, approve, or conditionally approve the application.

How often must a program renew site reviews and their program’s application?

Programs are required to renew applications and complete site reviews every six years.
