Marijuana testing is a rapidly expanding and necessary sector of the Montana marijuana industry. Under the Department of Public Health and Human Services, works to apply sound scientific methodology and knowledge to the state’s marijuana testing rules. Proper, comprehensive, and accurate testing of marijuana products is necessary to ensure the safety of the Montana consumer. Working with the State Environmental Laboratory, the Marijuana Laboratory Program strives to improve and regulate Montana’s marijuana testing laboratories through two major avenues.
First is the writing of administrative rule. Writing and amending rule helps the Marijuana Laboratory Program keep up with the everchanging marijuana industry as well as advancements in laboratory testing techniques. The Marijuana Laboratory Program conducts research into appropriate laboratory methodology as well as emerging analyses that apply to Montana’s industry. Rule writing is an ongoing process and one which allows the Marijuana Laboratory Program to apply research and scientific understanding to Montana’s marijuana testing requirements.
Second is the auditing of marijuana testing laboratories. Auditing allows the Marijuana Laboratory Program to ensure that marijuana testing laboratories follow administrative rules along with consistent and scientifically sound methodology to provide accurate results. Each marijuana testing laboratory in Montana is audited yearly following an initial audit prior to startup. In addition to determining whether laboratories are following testing rules, these audits also evaluate laboratory facilities, equipment, and personnel. Following the audit, laboratories are given feedback and an opportunity to improve their practices prior to receiving an endorsement. A letter of endorsement is given to laboratories that are determined by their audits to be capable of providing accurate and reliable results.
