For families who are seeking a little extra support with transition periods or who want to boost academic success, Family Resource Youth Service Center coordinators (FRYSC) are here to help.

These coordinators help remove non-academic barriers to learning to enhance academic success for students in elementary through high school. FRYSCs have established a record of success based on improved student performance in class work, homework, and peer relations, as reported by teachers.

FRYSCs are designed to help remove barriers to student learning.

The Division of Family Resource and Youth Service Centers—which has been in place since 1991—is led by Melissa Goins.

Each center assists students and families through programs, referrals to outside agencies and partnerships with groups both within and outside of the school. Programs and services are determined by the needs of the population served, available resources, location and other local characteristics.

The centers work with families to improve students' attendance, decrease behavior or suspension problems, offer academic support, deal with mental/physical health issues, and offer parent support and assistance. All students and families are served regardless of income. Parents also report they experience greater satisfaction and involvement with the schools due to services provided through their local FRYSCs.

As we approach the school year, many centers host back-to-school events at their schools or within their communities to provide school supplies, dental screenings, health and sports physicals and more to help families prepare for school.
