Care Home manager receives honour from the Queen

Rhona Gibson B.E.M.

A Kilmarnock care home manager has received a medal and a mention in the Queen's birthday honours list.

Rhona Gibson, General Manager for Thorntoun Care Services, received a BEM (British Empire Medal) for her years of charity work and to recognise her achievement as manager of an independent care home for over thirty years.

“I consider it a great honour to be recognised for the efforts over the last thirty years, but in no way could I have achieved this without the support and hard work of so many dedicated staff, past and present. They were enthusiastic, committed and loyal throughout. I must also mention my family who have helped so much.

The last two years put such a restriction on any attempts to raise money for good causes, but we will be back to pick up where we left off! The pandemic also brought out the very best in the staff team through their determination to continue delivering the highest and safest standard of care possible. I am immensely proud of them all.

The response from people who have been congratulating me on the award is truly amazing. I have received so many cards, emails, texts and flowers since the announcement. It is so humbling to think that people are taking the time to say well done when they are all leading such busy lives themselves.

What does please me immensely though is that through the award, the public get to know the fantastic work put in by dedicated carers and volunteers who are prepared to go the extra mile to help others less fortunate. It shines a light on positive action to support, protect and nurture those who need our support.

I shall wait with excitement for the official presentation of the British Empire Medal when I can take the opportunity to thank everyone publicly for their wonderful support and good wishes.”

Congratulations to Rhona and to all the staff and volunteers who joined her in making such a difference to the lives of others.
