As part of the Puerto Rico Caribbean Area Office’s 2022 preparedness initiatives, a series of meetings among FEMA, the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau (PREMB) and military forces located in Puerto Rico have been coordinated to discuss available capabilities in the island. Part of the conversations and elements discussed by the group have been the potential limiting factors of concern like to pre-identify and pre-stage military resources to support the state government during emergency and disaster events.
Key officials from the PR National Guard (PRNG), the 1st Mission Support Company from Fort Buchanan, and FEMA R2 Defense Coordinating Element, have been fully engaged in a regular monthly State Emergency Coordinators meeting with PREMB. These meetings go hand in hand with their active participation in the joint training and exercises that were conducted last year and will certainly continue during additional preparedness events planned for 2022.
Military resources have been instrumental in the response and recovery efforts of emergencies and disasters in Puerto Rico, specifically as we have been able to witness during the most recently COVID-19 pandemic operations.
