NLM’s newest video highlights the library’s position as the world’s leading biomedical research engine, providing scientists with the tools, methods, and databanks necessary to better understand and improve health.
Share this clip to help educate stakeholders about NLM’s role as a leader in computational biology, computational health data science research, and the research we support through our intramural and extramural research programs.
Renovations at NLM continue to progress, though global supply chain shortages and construction material delays are impacting the timeline. Check out the History of Medicine Division’s online exhibitions! AIDS, Posters, and Stories of Public Health: A People’s History of a Pandemic explores the archive of public health posters about AIDS. The curated selection of posters featured in the exhibition broadcast the message that, 40 years after the crisis began, AIDS is not over. Guest curated by artist, organizer, and writer Theodore Kerr, the online exhibition features dozens of posters and provides direct links to featured NLM health information resources.

Eugene Yaschenko Named Acting Chief, Information Resources Branch at NCBI

Eugene Yaschenko was named Acting Chief of the Information Resources Branch at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), with responsibility for the management of NCBI Information Technology (IT) systems and personnel.
Mr. Yaschenko will oversee the several computer systems used for software development, NCBI administrative tasks and desktop computing, and other activities. He will also be responsible for the direction and management of the DevOps team. Mr. Yaschenko will represent NCBI IT programs and activities to senior management and other NLM Divisions.
An NCBI employee since 1995, Mr. Yashenko most recently served as NCBI Chief Technology Officer, developing NCBI’s strategy for using technological resources and directing the creation of the DevOps platform as a foundation for adoption of CI/CD by production services.

Darlene Dodson passed away on December 4, 2021. She dedicated her career to public service. She began in the DHHS Office of the Secretary before moving to HRSA, and finally to the Budget Office for the National Library of Medicine, retiring in 2017.

Ark Doubintchik passed away in December 2021. At NCBI, Ark was a valuable member of the team, as a project manager and scrum master. In addition to overseeing his projects, Ark was an active member of the project management team, where he supported the product transition initiative and contributed to various process improvement efforts within the Project Management Office.
Ark will be remembered not only as a kind person, but as someone who was brave, often taking new challenges and encouraging others to try new things. His patience, willingness to offer a helping hand, and optimism made him a joy to work with.

Pat Gallagher passed away on December 1, 2021. She began her career at NLM in 2012 in the National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR). In 2010, Pat was nominated and selected to be a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, a rare honor for librarians. In 2018, she became a Fellow of the Medical Library Association. At the time of her retirement from NLM in June 2021, Pat worked in the Reference & Web Services Section supporting NICHSR and other NLM public services.
Pat’s husband, Stephen Greenberg – another longtime colleague in NLM’s Division of Library Operations – has arranged a virtual celebration of her life on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 6pm EST on Zoom. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ken Koyle (ken.koyle@nih.gov) for the link.

Kevin McShane passed away of December 22, 2021. He came to NLM as a serials cataloger from the Library of Congress where he was very instrumental in the establishment of the original ISSN standard. He served at NLM for nearly two decades, achieving the position of Head of the Serials Cataloging Unit, ultimately retiring in 2003. Many recall and will warmly remember his sharp wit and mischievous smile.

Frances Spina passed away December 21, 2021. She worked at NLM for 40 years, serving as the head of the Quality Assurance Unit in the Index Section for 34 years. She was awarded the Frank B. Rogers Award in 2005 for her work with MEDLINE. She is remembered for her many contributions to NLM and will be missed.

The NLM Town Hall technical support team invites staff to participate in two focus groups. We would like to learn about staff experiences with Town Hall connectivity and accessibility.
