As drought conditions worsen, and with another dry year expected, the Alameda County Water District may declare a water shortage emergency in anticipation of future water supply constraints.
At a December 9 public hearing, the ACWD Board of Directors will consider adoption of an Ordinance that declares a water shortage emergency and adopts mandatory water use restrictions to achieve a 15% water use reduction. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and provide input.
The Ordinance focuses primarily on outdoor water use, such as eliminating water waste, limiting outdoor irrigation while maintaining landscape viability and minimizing other non-essential use.
ACWD currently asks customers to voluntarily reduce water use by 15% compared to 2020. The proposed Water Shortage Emergency declaration would implement mandatory water use restrictions to achieve a service area-wide 15% reduction in water use. Individual customer accounts will not be subject to specific water use reduction levels, but rather the District seeks a systemwide demand reduction through limitations on irrigation of landscapes and other non-essential uses of water.
Customers are encouraged to maintain and irrigate trees to ensure survival during extended dry periods.
