NLM is kicking off the start of the summer with a blood drive called NLM Gives Back as a way to invest in our community.
During June, July, and August, you can make a difference by registering to give blood at the NIH Blood Bank on the Main Campus where your donations will support NLM Gives Back.
Donations are by appointment only, so contact the NIH Blood Bank to schedule your appointment today – and don’t forget to mention you are an NLM staff member. Details on how to make an appointment, timing donations around vaccinations, and other information can be found on the NIH Blood Bank homepage. Federal staff can be granted up to 2 hours of Administrative Leave per donation.
Updates about the blood drive will be in upcoming issues of NLM Insider.
For questions, please contact the NLM Office of Communications and Public Liaison at NLMCommunications@nlm.nih.gov.

Dr. Michael Chiang, in addition to his role as Director of the National Eye Institute, will join NLM’s Intramural Research Program as an investigator in ophthalmic informatics. Dr. Chiang was an NLM fellow from 2001-2003, and almost all of his research work has involved biomedical informatics in areas such as telehealth, artificial intelligence, data science, and EHRs.
He is most looking forward to interdisciplinary collaborative research with colleagues that advance our ability to take better care of patients. He has always been amazed to see how people with different backgrounds (academic or otherwise) can approach a problem from different perspectives to develop new insights.
Dr. Chiang hasn’t watched a single TV show for almost 20 years…until this pandemic. During the quarantine, he and his family watched all 22 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
Welcome New Intramural Research Program (IRP) Trainees
This summer, hundreds of students will log on for the 2021 NIH Virtual Summer Internship Program. NLM is proud to recognize our incoming summer trainees and new Postdoctoral Fellows to the IRP. We look forward to seeing research progress this summer at NLM.
Additionally, congratulations to the mentors who have won the Office of Intramural Training and Education Mentor Award.

This month, we celebrate the first NIH Emeritus from NLM, a Mover & Shaker, and recognize two retirements.

NLM is proud to announce the appointment of Stephen F. Altschul, PhD as a Scientist Emeritus at the NIH. Dr. Altschul is the first NLM intramural investigator to receive this honor. In this role, Dr. Altschul will continue to collaborate with scientists inside and outside of NIH, complete existing and join new research projects, and write and review scientific journal articles.
Dr. Altschul retired as a Senior Investigator from the Computational Biology Branch at NCBI on September 30, 2020. Over the course of 35 years at NLM, Dr. Altschul managed a robust bioinformatics research portfolio.
2021 Library Journal Mover & Shaker

Congratulations, Kathryn (Katie) Funk, Project Manager of PubMed Central who was named a 2021 Mover & Shaker by Library Journal. Ms. Funk was recognized for helping launch the Public Health Emergency COVID-19 Initiative, providing open access to coronavirus-related research and data as part of a collaboration with publishers and journals.
Congratulations to Patricia Gallagher who will retire on June 30. Since 2012, Patricia has been a librarian in our National Information Center on Health Services Research & Health Care Technology (NICHSR) and later in the Public Services Division. Prior to NLM, Patricia worked at the New York Academy of Medicine. She was honored to serve two terms on the Leiter Committee, including last year, when the Leiter Lecture was hosted virtually for the first time.
