NLM is kicking off the start of the summer with a blood drive called NLM Gives Back as a way to invest in our community.

During June, July, and August, you can make a difference by registering to give blood at the NIH Blood Bank on the Main Campus where your donations will support NLM Gives Back.

Donations are by appointment only, so contact the NIH Blood Bank to schedule your appointment today – and don’t forget to mention you are an NLM staff member. Details on how to make an appointment, timing donations around vaccinations, and other information can be found on the NIH Blood Bank homepage. Federal staff can be granted up to 2 hours of Administrative Leave per donation.

Updates about the blood drive will be in upcoming issues of NLM Insider.

Dr. Chiang portrait

Dr. Michael Chiang, in addition to his role as Director of the National Eye Institute, will join NLM’s Intramural Research Program as an investigator in ophthalmic informatics. Dr. Chiang was an NLM fellow from 2001-2003, and almost all of his research work has involved biomedical informatics in areas such as telehealth, artificial intelligence, data science, and EHRs.

He is most looking forward to interdisciplinary collaborative research with colleagues that advance our ability to take better care of patients. He has always been amazed to see how people with different backgrounds (academic or otherwise) can approach a problem from different perspectives to develop new insights.

Dr. Chiang hasn’t watched a single TV show for almost 20 years…until this pandemic. During the quarantine, he and his family watched all 22 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
