MADISON — State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly released the following statement today after Tuesday's general election, which included 79 school referendum questions on the ballot.
"Wisconsin voters made it clear they believe our children's future is worth investing in and supporting our public schools is the best way to move our state forward.
"While I am optimistic about what the outcomes of yesterday's election mean for the future of public education in Wisconsin, that optimism does not undermine the reality that too many communities are forced to make an unfair decision. With nearly 80 referendum questions on the ballot, voters across the state had to choose whether to increase property taxes just so their local schools can keep the lights on, pay their teachers, and continue providing a quality education to children in their communities.
"The school funding formula is broken, and it has failed our children, our schools, and entire communities for decades. Wisconsin’s public schools cannot continue to rely on referenda to provide the educational opportunities all students deserve.
"I am hopeful we are in a position to make meaningful change to the way we fund Wisconsin public schools, and I look forward to working with all of Wisconsin's elected leaders to do what is best for our children, our schools, our teachers, and our entire state."
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has a referendum reporting tool portal available to see the latest results by referendum question as reported by school district clerks. Additional information on Wisconsin referendums can also be found on the DPI's website, and historical data can be found on the department’s Data & Maps webpage. Please note, per state law, school district clerks have up to 10 days to certify results and report to the DPI. Official results will be updated as soon as possible after reports are submitted by clerks.
