Route 40: Project Celebration

Dear community members,

Next Thursday, we are celebrating the completion of major construction and faster, more reliable bus service. Please join us!

What: Celebration event with a ribbon cutting and words from community members.

When: Thursday, October 29 from 2pm to 3:30pm.

Where: Meet us at 2pm at the southbound bus stop at NW Vernon Pl and Leary Ave NW. From there, we'll take a short bus ride down the block to the ribbon-cutting celebration.

After event celebration:

After the Ribbon Cutting Celebration, join your neighbors for a casual get-together at Triangle Spirits in Fremont. If you're coming from Ballard, hop on Route 40 and experience the new improvements firsthand. And while you're there, Fremont will also be hosting its monthly Evening Market on Oct. 29, making it a great evening to explore the neighborhood.

What we accomplished

Over the course of this project, we worked hard to make the route safer, more accessible, and bus service more reliable for everyone who travels across the Fremont, Ballard, Westlake, and North Seattle neighborhoods.

A wide range of improvements were made to sidewalks and streets, and even to the watermains underneath, including:

  • 6,000 feet of upgraded sidewalks, creating a more comfortable and accessible walking and rolling environment
  • 200 feet of new watermains, upgrading critical underground infrastructure
  • 47 ADA-accessible curb ramps, improving access for all community members
  • 16 bus stop zones, improving access and reliability for bus riders
  • 2 blocks of protected bike lanes, allowing safer connections for people cycling and scootering
  • 15 new or upgraded crosswalks, making it safer for all community members to cross the street
  • 27 new street and pedestrian lights
  • Over 20,000 feet of electrical conduit for traffic signals and lighting

Thank you, Route 40 community!

Projects of this size take time and we sincerely appreciate your partnership, patience, and engagement throughout construction. Thank you to the community members, businesses, organizations, transit riders, folks that walk, bike, or roll, and everyone who traveled through this corridor during the busy construction seasons and continued to visit and support adjacent businesses.

Your input and support helped shape these improvements, and we're so excited to celebrate!

We hope to see you on Thursday, October 29 as we reach the biggest milestone yet.
