Final construction activities continue through the corridor
The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project is wrapping up the last construction activities to improve pedestrian and transit infrastructure in the neighborhood.
As construction nears completion, crews shift their focus to a "punch list". This is a final checklist of smaller items that need to be completed, adjusted, or inspected before the project is finished.
As work continues, you may see:
- Vehicle lane or parking restrictions
- Temporary sidewalk detours or narrowed pedestrian access
- Temporary driveway impacts
- Construction equipment, trucks, and crews working intermittently throughout the corridor
- Periodic construction noise, dust, and vibration
Please continue to follow posted signs and directions from construction crews as you travel through the area.
What to expect by neighborhood
As we've previously announced, we plan to add a new westbound bus stop on N 36th St, between Greenwood Ave N and Phinney Ave N. Crews may begin initial concrete saw-cutting as early as tomorrow, September 10. Main construction is scheduled to begin Monday, September 14. This work will include sidewalk and driveway upgrades in front of the 7/11 gas station and convenience store. The sidewalk will be closed and parking lane restricted during this work. Construction is expected to last for approximately two weeks.
Crews will also move a pedestrian light near the eastbound Fremont Ave N and N 35th St bus stop to support future maintenance access for Seattle City Light. To reroute the underground wiring, crews will remove and replace a small section of new sidewalk behind the bus stop, working carefully around nearby tree roots. This work could begin as early as late September 2026.
On Fremont Ave N, between N 35th St and N 36th St, we will make striping and lane changes. For northbound traffic on Fremont Ave N, we will remove the dedicated left-turn lane at N 36th St, but vehicles will still be able to make left turns onto N 36th St from the general-purpose traffic lane. These updates will create more room for loading and unloading and provide additional space for southbound bike travel. These changes are based on feedback from local businesses and people who bike through the area. This work could begin in fall 2026.
South of Fremont bridge, some striping work will occur near the southbound Westlake Ave N bus stop as soon as fall 2026.
Other work in Fremont will focus on completing final roadway and streetscape improvements, including:
-
Pavement markings and signage
-
Sidewalk and curb ramp touch-ups
-
Landscaping and planting restoration
-
Drainage and utility adjustments
-
Removal of temporary construction materials
Crews will complete a variety of final improvements throughout Ballard, including:
- Sidewalk and pavement repairs.
- Landscaping restoration, including planting areas and tree pits.
- Installation and adjustment of permanent signs and pavement markings.
- Final drainage and concrete work, focused mainly on NW Leary Way and 20th Ave NW. This work will be as early as late September 2026
- Most of this work is short and will move between locations as crews finish each task.
Access to homes, businesses, and transit service will be maintained whenever possible.

Thank you for your patience and support as this work continues. Each improvement now in place helps maintain our essential infrastructure and build a safer, more connected, and more reliable Route 40 corridor for everyone who lives, works, shops, and travels here.
