Dear Aurora Avenue friends,
Thank you to all who shared their feedback on our design concepts and visions for the future of Aurora Ave N. This summer, we reviewed and summarized your input from the Aurora Ave N survey, open houses, and other outreach we conducted in the spring. You can learn more in the Outreach Summary, available in is available in English. The Outreach Report and translated Summary can be found on the Project Webpage.
Project Background
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and King County Metro (Metro) are collaborating on a new vision to enhance safety, mobility and access for everyone on the Aurora Ave N corridor. From March to May 2024, we conducted our latest round of community engagement online and in-person to learn more about the priorities of community members, business owners, and people who live, work, and travel on Aurora Ave N.
What we’ve heard so far
In spring 2024, we engaged with almost 10,000 people who live, work, or travel near Aurora Ave N. We gave opportunities for people to share feedback in many ways, both online and in-person. Most people saw their ideas and feedback represented in at least one of the draft design ideas
-
About 60% of people surveyed felt their ideas are represented in the draft design ideas
-
About 10% didn’t feel that their ideas are represented
Some ideas were supported by mostly everyone, including better sidewalks, more crossings, lighting, and landscaping. However, people had different opinions about bike lanes and bus lanes.
How we engaged the community
So far, we have facilitated three rounds of community involvement in the early planning stage of the Aurora Ave Project (2022 to 2024). Contributions from the community helped us pinpoint priorities, address challenges, recognize possibilities along Aurora Ave N, and provide insights on various design options.
Open house participants at the Bitter Lake Community Center look at the project area map and draft design ideas for the Aurora Ave Project.
Combining online, mailing, and in-person outreach, over 9,600 people engaged with the Aurora Ave Project in spring 2024. Beyond that, we had over 430,000 views on social media for this project. We reached people in at least 148 zip codes.

We are using what we heard to refine the design concepts and complete an initial evaluation of these ideas
-
Our team will prepare a summary report on the concept development and evaluation process, which will be shared later this year
-
What we learn will inform the next phase of corridor planning, planned to kick off early next year. This work is funded by a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant.
-
Stay tuned for more opportunities to get engaged and provide feedback in 2025
We will keep you informed about the project and upcoming events through our project website and via our project listserv.
