Progress highlights

Construction is on track for completion in this fall

Construction progress in July has been vital to the project as it moves toward completion in the fall, when service begins on Saturday, September 14. While heavy construction wrapped up earlier in the summer, July saw our crews complete countless details, repairs, upgrades, and finishing touches that tie the revamped Madison St. corridor together with some final details to wrap up this fall.

Our crews have been filling in gaps in new roadway painting and markings, adding features to bus shelters, repairing damaged sidewalks and removing debris and equipment that is old and leftover from prior eras.

Better connections are about to begin!

With RapidRide G Line service just a few months away, now is a good time to consider your travel options throughout the Madison St. corridor.

Flip Your Trip is Seattle’s ultimate guide to safe travel options! By clicking here, you can explore sustainable ways to get around the city, including transit, walking, rolling, biking and shared rides.

If you are new to Seattle Transit, paying your fare is easy! You can choose between the reloadable ORCA Card, and the TransitGO App, which offer points for free rides and allow contactless payment with cash or credit card. Construction updates

Roadway painting continues

Crews have been working throughout July to paint the remaining street markings for the RapidRide G corridor. You’ve likely noticed the painting photos in previous updates or in person when traveling along the roadway. Our crews continue to install the last markings, ensure that new markings are up to standard and make improvements where necessary.

Travel impacts during roadway painting will be short-term. Please follow signage and/or crew members as directed. Final roadway painting is scheduled to take place through August.

Bus shelter and station progress

July saw further progress on toward the completion of bus shelter construction for the RapidRide G Line. Recently, we installed Orca Card readers at the shelters. These readers will help prevent delays as travelers will not have to pay the fare as they board the bus. Instead, travelers will be able to pay when they arrive at the shelter and simply board the bus at any door when it arrives. No more queues at the front door!

In August and early September, we will continue to add features and finishing touches to the bus shelters to ensure they are ready for service. These features include new glass, handrails, signage, ticket vending machines and ADA striping.

Signal and lighting work

Signal and lighting work is nearly complete. Over the course of the project, we have revamped and upgraded lighting along the entire corridor, from Downtown to Madison Valley. Remaining are some lights and signals Downtown, in the area of Madison St. and 1st and 2nd Avenues. When our crews are done with these areas, the corridor lighting work will be complete.  September.

Detours, Closures and Restrictions

Lane reductions on Madison St and 2nd Ave

Short-term, temporary lane reductions will be in place while crews replace and upgrade specialty brick pavers for the buildings at the southwest corner of this intersection. During the work, one lane of traffic will be blocked. Pedestrian detours will be in place. Vehicle traffic will remain open.

Weekend partial closure at the intersection of Madison St. And 12th Ave

Starting the night of August 16, we will be repairing a roadway panel in the center of the intersection of Madison St. and 12th Ave. During the work, which lasts through the weekend, eastbound and westbound traffic on Madison St. will remain open. However, drivers will not be able to turn left off of E Madison St. onto 12th Ave in either direction. For drivers on 12th Ave, through traffic across Madison St. will be closed. Instead, drivers will have to turn right onto Madison St and use detours to continue north or southbound. Additionally, drivers on 12th Ave will not be able to turn left onto Madison St. in either direction. The intersection will reopen by 5 am Monday, August 19.

Left turn restrictions

The left turn restrictions that were implemented earlier this spring are now permanent. These restrictions are necessary to maintain safety and traffic flow for when RapidRide G service begins. Signage is currently in place for drivers where left turns are prohibited:

  • Madison St. to 8th Ave
  • Madison St. to Terry Ave
  • Madison St. to Minor Ave
  • Madison St. to Summit Ave
  • Madison St. to Boylston Ave
  • Madison St. to 10th Ave
  • Madison St. to 15th Ave
  • Madison St. to 17th Ave
  • Madison St. to 18th Ave

To support safety and traffic operations once the new bus lanes and bus island stations are built, we will permanently restrict left turns at other intersections on Madison St. from First Hill to Capitol Hill.

  • Map of Westbound left turn restrictions can be found here.
  • Map of Eastbound left turn restrictions can be found here.

Progress by numbers

Every month, the construction management team gathers data on the project's progress for various purposes. This data is reviewed at the end of each month. Here is the latest set of reviewed data, from July.

  • We installed 539 square feet of flexible porous surface treatment (flexi-pave).
  • We formed and poured 282 square yards of concrete sidewalks.
  • We installed 27 traffic signs.
  • We painted 10,237 feet of 8-foot wide thermoplastic striping. This striping is used for stop bars and crosswalk markings. In addition, we’ve used thermoplastic striping for 151 new traffic symbols, such as turn arrows.
  • We painted 22,639 feet of lane lines.
  • We painted 24,759 square feet of red “bus-only" markings.
  • We installed 30 new traffic signal heads and 14 pedestrian push buttons.
  • We installed 53 wireless traffic signal sensors.

King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations

As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, Google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at (206) 553-3000.

A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:

  •  The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in fall 2024.
