Progress highlights

Construction passes 90% with start of service on the horizon

The RapidRide - G Madison St. project reached 90% completion mark earlier this spring. Construction, which began in 2021, is now in its final stages, with service on track to begin September 14, 2024. All major roadway construction is done, and we’ll continue working on a few sidewalk segments, carrying out some patch work, and making touch-ups along the nearly 2.5-mile-long stretch of roadway

This summer, we will finish the project. These finishing touches include:

  • Painting and road marking
  • New landscaping
  • Signal and lighting upgrades
  • Bus shelter and station construction

Construction updates

Roadway painting and striping continues

More roadway painting will continue in June as the final look of the RapidRide G route takes shape. Well paint new crosswalks, long lines, stop bars, and symbols on top of the newly constructed roadway. Most of this painting work will take place during nighttime hours in Downtown, First Hill, and Capitol Hill. Painting will also continue in Madison Valley on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and at the intersection with E Madison St.

Bus shelter and station progress

Last month, we continued progress on the bus shelters that will serve RapidRide G riders. In April, we completed all the bus shelter frames. In May, we installed the roofs for these shelters. This summer, we will finish by adding glass, signage, and off-board payment readers. All stations will be fully operational before the start of service in September.

Signal work

As we noted in last month’s email update, we have completed much of the signal modifications, including the addition of new signals at 10th and 18th avenues. The next phase is commissioning. This is the process of ensuring that the new lighting systems are installed correctly and are fully operational. This involves testing and verifying that all components of the lighting system function as intended.

This summer, the crews will be working with Seattle City Light so that these new signals are part of the city traffic grid and will be functional when RapidRide G Line service begins in the fall. In June, we will be completing commissioning work at the following locations:

  • 1st Ave and Madison St.
  • 2nd Ave and Madison St.
  • 9th Ave and Spring St.
  • Broadway and Madison St.
  • 19th Ave and Madison St.
  • 19th Ave and Union St.
  • E Harrison St. and Martin Luther King Jr Way.

While this work is underway, we’ll provide access for pedestrians around the work areas at these locations.

Lighting upgrades

As part of this project, the Madison St. corridor has undergone a lighting makeover. In collaboration with Seattle City Light, SDOT is refurbishing the lighting along RapidRide G route. This includes installing new poles, replacing lights and luminaires, improving electrical connections, and wiring and adding pedestrian lighting where necessary. In addition, we will be upgrading the lighting at each bus shelter and station. This work will continue throughout the summer.

Future Layover Facility

Construction on the future RapidRide G Layover Facility on Harrison Street near the triangle intersection of E. Arthur Place, E. Harrison Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way E in Madison Valley continues.

An Illustration of the future RapidRide G Layover Facility

Here is what you need to know:

  • A layover facility is where King County Metro bus operators of the RapidRide G Line can park buses and take their mandated rest breaks. When complete, the new facility will have three spaces for buses to layover.
  • The new layover facility will be available to operators 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. This facility will not be open to the public or transit riders.

Benefits of a having a layover facility:

  • Keeps parked buses out of the flow traffic.
  • Provides a safe location for operators to take mandated rest breaks.

Here’s what to expect once the layover facility is complete:

  • New roadway changes and traffic signals that will help improve traffic flow.
  • Typical noises from buses operating in this area.

Detours, Closures and Restrictions

Lane reductions on Madison St and 2nd Ave

Short-term, temporary lane reductions will be in place while crews replace and upgrade specialty brick pavers for the buildings around this intersection. During the work, one lane will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place. Vehicle traffic will remain open.

Clean up and restoration at 8th Ave and Madison St.

The sidewalk on the south side of Madison St. between 8th and 9th Avenues remains closed after the building fire and demolition earlier this year. All traffic closures have been eliminated and full vehicle access has been restored

Closure at the intersection of 25th Ave and E Madison St.

Starting June 11, the intersection on the north side of E Madison St. and 25th Ave will be closed for approximately one week in both directions. East and westbound traffic on E Madison St. will remain open. However, vehicles traveling on E Madison St. in either direction will not be able to turn north onto 25th Ave. Similarly, vehicles traveling south on 25th Ave will not be able to turn onto E Madison St. in either direction

Left turn restrictions

The left turn restrictions that were implemented earlier this spring are now permanent. These restrictions are necessary to maintain safety and traffic flow for when RapidRide G service begins. Signage is currently in place for drivers where left turns are prohibited:

  • Madison St. to 8th Ave
  • Madison St. to Terry Ave
  • Madison St. to Minor Ave
  • Madison St. to Summit Ave
  • Madison St. to Boylston Ave
  • Madison St. to 10th Ave
  • Madison St. to 15th Ave
  • Madison St. to 17th Ave
  • Madison St. to 18th Ave

To support safety and traffic operations once the new bus lanes and bus island stations are built, we will permanently restrict left turns at other intersections on Madison St. from First Hill to Capitol Hill.

  • Map of Westbound left turn restrictions can be found here.
  • Map of Eastbound left turn restrictions can be found here.

Progress by numbers

Every month, the construction management team gathers data on the project's progress for various purposes. This data is reviewed at the end of each month. Here is the latest set of reviewed data, from April.

  • Hauled in, placed, and compacted 392 tons of mineral aggregate (gravel).
  • Milled 4,107 square yards of existing asphalt pavement to prepare for the final overlay.
  • Paved 1,282 tons of warm mix asphalt (WMA).
  • Planted 31 trees, 84 shrubs, and 1,304 ground cover plants, including 248 feet of tree root barrier.
  • Formed and poured 321 feet of new concrete curbing and 762 square yards of new concrete sidewalks.
  • Installed 42 new traffic signal heads, 29 pedestrian push buttons, and 36 traffic loops.
  • Trenched and installed 1,841 feet of signal and lighting conduit, including 33 underground electrical junction boxes (handholes).

King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations

As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

 Transit Alerts

Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, Google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at (206) 553-3000.

A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:

  • The outbound Route 8 has returned to its normal alignment through Madison Valley. We do not anticipate any more long-term detours. Due to some construction, temporary bus stop relocations for the Route 8 are possible.
  • The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in fall 2024.
