Progress highlights
New roadway painting is taking place on the RapidRide G corridor
Today, we started roadway painting for the RapidRide G – Madison St. project. The roadway painting and marking now underway will be completed before service begins later this year.
We were able to install some painting and marking earlier this year downtown. This current effort will expand on those markings, starting downtown at 3rd Ave and extending all the way to Martin Luther King Jr Way in Madison Valley.
We will start with painting new pedestrian crossings, stop bars and lane lines downtown and work our way towards First Hill and Capitol Hill. This work is scheduled to take place throughout the spring and summer and will finish in August. The final piece will be the red bus lanes and green bike lanes, along with crosswalks and lines in areas that were only recently paved with asphalt.
We do not anticipate any extended or long-term closures associated with roadway painting.
Temporary markings will be replaced by permanent paint along the corridor; photo above shows the current conditions at the intersection Madison St and 16th Ave
All bus stops and shelter frames have been installed
Last week, we finished installing the remaining bus stops, pads, and shelter frames for the entire RapidRide G corridor.
As we near the start of service, crews will be returning to the bus stops to install the finishing touches. These final steps include glass for the shelter frames, benches, waste bins, ORCA card readers and real-time information displays, lighting and signage.

Bus Islands
In April, we completed building the foundations for the four center bus stations, or bus islands, on Madison St. In addition, we installed the bus islands’ shelter frames that will serve future riders.
Like the rest of the shelters along the corridor, the final touches are yet to come. We will install roofs and additional signage, along with safety markings this summer, before the start of the service.

Construction updates
Rodway milling and asphalt work
In April, we removed the top few inches of asphalt from the road surface on the portions of the roadway that had not been replaced or rebuilt earlier in the project.
Last week, we started laying new asphalt at different locations along the corridor, from 3rd Avenue downtown to Martin Luther King Jr Way in Madison Valley.
The new asphalt will create a smoother and safer driving surface for the corridor. This work will continue into the summer, wrapping up in August, before RapidRide service begins.

Sidewalk work
Rebuilding the sidewalks along the RapidRide G corridor has been a significant undertaking for this project. In most locations, we added new conduit for streetlights, signals, and electrical service under the sidewalk and rebuilt ADA ramps at intersections.
We also worked around many driveways throughout Madison Street, scheduling work at these locations to minimize disruptions to businesses and residents as much as possible. After nearly three years, we are almost done! We are currently on track to finish all sidewalk work by August and only have three more driveways left to rebuild.
When complete, the new sidewalks will provide a smoother, accessible experience for pedestrians.
Signal work
We have completed much of the signal modifications, including addition of new signals at 10th and 18th avenues. Signal work, including adding or modifying electrical and communications connections and installing new equipment, is underway at the remaining intersections: Spring and 7th, Spring and 9th, Madison and 14th, and Madison and Martin Luther King Jr. Way E.
As new signals are coming online, we are removing old equipment and restoring the sidewalks at each intersection. Later this month, we will be completing this work at the following locations:
-
11th Ave and Madison St.
-
12th Ave and Madison St.
-
13th Ave and Madison St.
-
14th Ave and Madison St.
-
15th Ave and Madison St.
We will provide access for pedestrians around the work areas at these locations.

Future comfort station and G Line Terminus
Construction on the future comfort station at the G Line Terminus on Harrison Street near the triangle intersection of E. Arthur Place, E. Harrison Street and Martin Luther King, Jr Way E. in Madison Valley continues. We have built the platform and foundation for the structure that will serve RapidRide G bus operators. During May, we will work on installing the ground wiring.
Construction work in the future comfort station area
A comfort station is a space where King County Metro bus operators of the RapidRide G Line can take their mandated rest breaks and access clean restroom facilities. The Comfort Station also provides a workspace for operators and supervisors.
RapidRide G Line hours of service are anticipated 24 hours a day / 7 days a week with higher frequencies during the day on weekdays and Saturdays. This comfort station will not be open to the public or transit riders.
In addition to the comfort station, the Terminus includes layover space for up to three buses. Having this layover space will ensure that buses will be available to stay on schedule. A new traffic signal at E Harrison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way E will allow buses to turn onto Martin Luther King Jr Way E to start service toward downtown. Traffic on eastbound E Harrison St is now right-turn only at Martin Luther King Jr Way E.
Detours, Closures and Restrictions
2nd Ave in downtown remains one lane between Madison and Spring St
Our crews are performing electrical trenching and conduit work and sidewalk work at the intersection of 2nd Ave and Madison St. 2nd Ave will remain reduced to one lane between Madison St. and Spring St. until the work finishes later this year.
Clean up and restoration at 8th Ave and Madison St
The sidewalk on the south side of Madison St. between 8th and 9th Avenues remains closed after the building fire and demolition earlier this year. All traffic closures have been eliminated and full vehicle access has been restored.
Left turn restrictions
The left turn restrictions that were implemented earlier this spring are now permanent. These restrictions are necessary to maintain safety and traffic flow for when RapidRide G service begins. Signage is currently in place for drivers where left turns are prohibited:
-
Madison St. to 8th Ave
-
Madison St. to Terry Ave
-
Madison St. to Summit Ave
-
Madison St. to Boylston Ave.
Below are maps that show the exact locations of turn restrictions along the Madison St corridor.

Map of Eastbound left turn restrictions can be found here.
Progress by numbers
Every month, the construction management team gathers data on the project's progress for various purposes. This data is reviewed at the end of each month. Here is the latest set of reviewed data, from March.
-
We installed 328 feet of concrete curbing.
-
We formed and poured 1,615 square yards of new concrete sidewalks, including 178 square yards of driveways.
-
We installed 40 new pedestrian and vehicle signal heads.
-
We installed 18 new pedestrian push buttons.
-
We wired 6 new traffic signals.
-
We trenched and installed 4,231 feet on signal and lighting conduit.

King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations
As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.
Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, Google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at (206) 553-3000.
A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:
-
The outbound Route 8 remains rerouted at 23rd Ave and connects to southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way via Union St. in Madison Valley. This detour is in place due to spatial constraints caused by ongoing sidewalk work in Madison Valley. This route is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring. The inbound Route 8 has returned to its original alignment.
-
The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in fall 2024.
