Crews have finished installing most bus shelter frames for the RapidRide G
In February, we finished building most of the bus shelter frames that will serve riders on the RapidRide G – Madison St BRT line. In total, there will be 18RapidRide G stations. Four of these stations will be “center-running,” meaning they will sit in the center median of the roadway. The shelters are comprised primarily of steel and glass, and already feature the King County Metro RapidRide colors. Off-board payment in the form of Orca Card readers will be available to riders at every station, which will reduce wait times for buses. In addition, three ticket vending machines will be in place at different locations along the RapidRide G route. Crews will return to each station to complete the finishing touches shortly before service begins later this year.

Bus Islands In First Hill
In the past month, we have made progress on building the foundations of the center bus stations, or bus islands, for the First Hill segment of the RapidRide G.
In total, there will be four bus islands:
-
8th Avenue, between 7th Ave and 8th Ave
-
Terry Avenue, between Terry Ave and Boren Ave
-
Boylston Avenue, between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave
-
13th Avenue, between 12th Ave and 13th Ave
Crews continue to work on the foundations of the islands at 8th, Boylston, and 13th Avenues, while the foundation of the island at Terry Avenue is finished. The center bus stations are an essential design feature that will cut down on travel time along the corridor. By placing the bus stations in the center of the street with a dedicated, bus-only lane, our buses will not have to change lanes, merge with passing traffic or navigate parked and double-parked vehicles along the sidewalks.

Construction Updates
We continue to make great construction progress, including recently starting construction of the new bus islands. Once the RapidRide G Line project is complete, there will be new red bus lanes from 1st Ave to 18th Ave and four new bus islands. These islands are located at 8th Ave, Terry Ave, between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave, between12th and 13th Ave.
We’ve started installing new signals for the RapidRide G – Madison St system. In February, we completed installation of the new signal at 9th Ave and Madison St. Later in March, we will install new signals along Madison St at Boren Ave, Minor Ave, Summit Ave and 7th Ave. We will also install a new signal on Spring St and 7th Ave. While we install the new signal hardware, there will be temporary traffic changes through the intersection.
Clean up and restoration at 8th Ave and Madison St
There has been progress cleaning the site of a burned building on 8th Ave and Madison St. All traffic closures have been eliminated and full vehicle access has been restored. All bus lines that were detoured in the aftermath of the building fire have been returned to their original routes. Some pedestrian safety precautions will remain in place until the area is completely clean.
Left turn restrictions
As we mentioned last month, we have started restricting left turns at a few intersections in First Hill to make room for construction of the new bus islands. Currently, there are left turn restrictions in place from Madison St to 8th Ave and Terry Ave as well as from Madison St to Summit Ave and Boylston Ave.
To support safety and traffic operations once the new bus lanes and center-running bus stations are built, we will permanently restrict left turns at many intersections on Madison St from First Hill to Capitol Hill.

Future comfort station
With the final phase of major roadway construction in Madison Valley wrapped up, we are starting work on the future bus comfort station at E Arthur Pl and E Harrison St, west of Martin Luther King Jr Way. The comfort station provides a rest area for bus drivers as they turn their buses around to begin their return routes westbound, towards downtown.
Detours and Closures
Madison Street will be reduced to one lane in downtown
Starting in mid-March, we will be conducting trenching and utility conduit work in the area of 2nd Ave and Madison St. During this work, Madison St will be reduced to one lane. We anticipate the work to take 2 to 3 weeks.
Lane closures during signal work near Boren Ave
We will implement temporary lane closures near Boren Ave while we perform some of the signal work mentioned earlier. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic.
Intersection of Minor Ave and Madison St
15th Ave closed on the northside of E Madison St
15th Ave north of E Madison St remains closed to vehicles while we complete utility work and finish a new sidewalk bulb at the intersection. In mid-March, we will reopen southbound 15th to E Madison St. However, northbound will not reopen.
Access to E Madison St from southbound 28th Ave remains closed
Vehicle access connecting to E Madison St or Martin Luther King Jr Way from southbound 28th Ave is still closed while our crews finish sidewalk and utility work around this intersection. We anticipate this closure to remain in place into mid-March. However, vehicles looking to connect to northbound 28th Ave from E Madison St or Martin Luther King Jr are able to do so.

King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations
As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.
Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, Google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at (206) 553-3000.
A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:
-
The outbound Route 8 remains rerouted at 23rd Ave and connects to southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way via Union St in Madison Valley. This detour is in place due to spatial constraints caused by ongoing sidewalk work in Madison Valley. This route is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring. The inbound Route 8 has returned to its original alignment.
- The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
