Welcome to the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project newsletter!

Since 2020, we’ve been sending out email updates focusing on key design milestones and sharing information on how to get involved with the project. We’ve appreciated how involved community members have been and we look forward to providing you with updates for the remainder of the project!

In our last email update, we shared that we recently selected Jansen Inc. as the construction contractor for this project. As we continue working with neighbors to prepare for construction, we will start a new series of email newsletters to focus on specific design and construction elements for this project!

For our first email update, we will focus on the watermain upgrades on Fremont Ave N.

Construction crews working on watermain.

Crews replace a 120-year-old watermain along E Madison St as part of RapidRide G. Watermain construction in Fremont is scheduled to begin in 2025.

SDOT and SPU are working together to upgrade your watermain

We are working with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to replace a 100-year-old waterline under Fremont Ave between N 34th St and N 35th St. This collaboration between SDOT and SPU will aim to minimize traffic impacts while completing these crucial replacements to the area’s aging watermain.

In 2025, SDOT will demolish and upgrade the concrete street on Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St. Under the street, there is a watermain that needs to be upgraded. SPU will upgrade the watermain while the street is demolished and the Route 40 improvements are installed.

Completing the watermain upgrades and the street upgrades at the same time will help reduce impacts to the community by coordinating major construction projects. It also helps reduce travel impacts, minimize construction costs, and shorten construction timelines compared to the projects being completed separately.

Want to learn more? Check out the watermain factsheet on our project website!

What to expect in 2025

  • Noise, dust, and vibration from concrete removal
  • Detours for people walking, biking, and driving
  • Lane and sidewalk closures on Fremont Ave N
  • Planned water shutoffs
  • Neighbors will be notified in advance of planned shutoffs

Maintaining mobility for all travelers is important to us which is why we are working closely with neighbors and other agencies to ensure we are limiting our impacts as much as we can. Watermain upgrades will begin after nearby construction for the 15th Ave NW Paving Project and SPU’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project is completed.

Thank you for meeting with us last week!

Thanks to Caffé Ladro in Fremont and Ballard Coffee Works for hosting our pre-construction information sessions about the Route 40 project! And thanks to the many residents, commuters, and business owners who joined us to find out more about how we will work with neighbors during construction. In March, we will have more opportunities to meet with staff and learn about the project.

Our Route 40 preconstruction survey is still open!

Don't forget to check out our survey! We hope to understand how neighbors, visitors, and business owners get around their neighborhoods and see how we can coordinate with you during construction. We want to hear how we can work with you during construction!
