Major roadway work nearing end as projects hits the 80% completion mark!

Here's what is included in this month's email update:

  • Construction updates
  • Updates on what we’ve been working on and construction progress
  • What’s coming up next month
  • Resources and contact information

Roadway construction is wrapping up on the RapidRide G corridor/80% mark

Roadway work in the Madison Valley area is set to wrap up early this month. When this happens, it will mark the completion of the last major roadway construction work for the entire RapidRide G project! At this point, the project will surpass the 80% completion milestone with service to begin later this year. The completion of roadway construction ends a significant amount of work on the project and the last of major roadway disruptions along the corridor.

More of the finishing touches are taking shape along the project corridor. Our crews are working toward completion of the center median for the eventual bus station at Madison St and Terry Ave. Later this Spring, we will be adding more paint to the new roadway in First Hill.

Emergency Closure of Madison St between 8th Ave and Terry Ave

As we noted last month, a building fire in December has caused street and sidewalk closures on Madison St and 9th Ave. These closures are necessary to ensure that people traveling and workers managing the response are safe while they remove the damaged building and restore the area. They began demolition of the damaged structure earlier this week and will restore vehicle access when it is safe to do so. We anticipate that the demolition, removal, and cleanup will last 4-6 weeks. Closures and detours may change depending on how the work progresses. We will continue to keep you informed of changes and will reopen areas as soon as it is safe to do so.

Current street and sidewalk closures:

  • Madison St is closed between 8th Ave and Boren Ave. Madison St is open for local access to driveways and alleys between 7th Ave and 8th Ave, and between 9th Ave and Boren Ave.
  • Sidewalks on both sides of Madison St are closed between 8th Ave and 9th Ave. Pedestrian access is maintained to building entrances as determined safe (see map).
  • 9th Ave is open to local access between Madison St and Marion St. Pedestrians and people parking in the Bloodworks garage can enter via Marion St. 9th Ave is also open to local access between Spring St and Madison St. To access this area, people should enter from Spring St. Access to 9th Ave is closed at Madison St.
  • Sidewalks on both sides of 9th Ave between Madison St and Marion St are also closed with pedestrian access maintained to building entrances as determined safe (see map below).

Driver detours:

Drivers traveling east on Madison St are detoured at 7th Ave to Seneca St, to Boren Ave, to Madison St. Drivers traveling west on Madison St are detoured at Boren Ave to Seneca St to 5th Ave.

Bus detours and bus stop closures:

  • Buses are not traveling on 9th Ave between Spring St and James St, and all bus stops in this area are closed.
  • Buses are not traveling on Madison St from 3rd Ave to Boren Ave, and all bus stops in this area are closed.
  • Buses are detoured off Marion Ave from 3rd Ave to 6th Ave, and all bus stops in this area are closed.

Below are the current detour routes for buses traveling in this area. Bus drivers are instructed to stop at all signed bus stops along the detour routes. Bus detours may change as the building demolition continues and in the event of possible snow routes. People should visit King County Metro alerts for the latest information about bus detours and bus stop closures and to sign up for transit alerts.

  • Route 12: The eastbound Rt 12 is detoured off Marion St at 3rd Ave. Eastbound buses are traveling on 3rd Ave to James St, Boren Ave, and returning on Madison St at Boren Ave. The westbound Rt 12 is detoured off Madison St at Boren Ave. Westbound buses are traveling on Boren Ave, to James St, to 3rd Ave, and returning to Madison St at 3rd Ave.
  • Route 60: The eastbound Rt 60 is detoured off 9th Ave at James St. Eastbound buses are traveling on 9th Ave to James St, Boren Ave, and returning to Madison St at Boren Ave. The westbound Rt 60 is detoured off Madison St at Boren Ave. Westbound buses are traveling on Madison St to Boren Ave, James St, and returning to 9th Ave at James St.
  • Route 193 to First Hill is detoured off 9th Ave at Seneca St continuing to Boren Ave, James St, and then returning to 9th Ave at James St.
  • Route 193 to Federal Way TC is detoured off 9th Ave at James St, 7th Ave, Hubbell Pl, and returning to regular routing at Seneca St.

Construction of the Madison RapidRide G Line continues

We’re working with the contractor to review the remaining construction schedule, adjust the timing of some construction activities, and identify other areas where we can continue safely working to manage any potential delays caused by the fire response.

Construction Updates

We continue to make great construction progress, currently, Martin Luther King Jr Way and the surrounding area is the primary work area. The road work is in its final stages, and we continue to work on the sidewalks. We’re rebuilding the road on E Arthur Pl and E Harrison St west of Martin Luther King Jr Way around the future comfort station and bus layover area. Painting and signage will resume until spring/summer.

Also, we recently began construction of the new center running bus stations. Once the RapidRide G Line project is complete, there will be new red bus lanes from 1st Ave to 18th Ave and four new bus stations in the center of the street. These stations are located at 8th Ave, Terry Ave, between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave, and between 12th Ave and 13th Ave.

We’re installing new signals for the RapidRide G – Madison St system at the intersection of 12th Ave and E Madison St. You’ll start seeing these new signals taking shape in February. While we install the new signal hardware, there will be temporary traffic changes through the intersection.

Work is progressing on the stations located in First Hill. There are single traffic lane closures in each direction on Madison St around the work areas, which include:

  • Between 7th Ave and 8th Ave
  • Between Terry Ave and Boren Ave
  • Between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave

Left turn restrictions

To support safety and traffic operations once the new bus lanes and center running bus stations are built, we will permanently restrict left turns at many intersections on Madison St from First Hill to Capitol Hill, as follows.

Eastbound left turn restrictions and alternative routes:

Eastbound left turn restrictions and alternative routes

Westbound left turn restrictions and alternative routes:

Westbound left turn restrictions and alternative routes:

We’ve restricted left turns at a few intersections in First Hill with construction of the new center running stations.

Detours and Closures

Madison St closed between 8th and Boren Ave

As noted above, traffic is closed on Madison St between 8th and 9th Ave and on 9th Ave between Madison and Spring St during demolition of the fire-damaged building.

Traffic reduced to one lane intermittently at the intersection of 12th Ave and E Madison St

We will be reducing traffic to one lane in the area around 12th Ave and E Madison St while our crews build and install new signals at this intersection. The lane reductions are necessary for safety.

15th Ave closed on the northside of E Madison St

Starting in early February, to 15th Ave from E Madison St on the northside will be closed while we upgrade utilities and build a new sidewalk bulb. We anticipate this work to last through February and possibly into March. When the work is over, 15th Ave will reopen as a one-way, southbound-only road for vehicles.

Access to E Harrison St and E Arthur Pl west of Martin Luther King Jr Way and Southbound 28th Ave at E Madison St closed to vehicles

We are nearing the completion of roadwork in Madison Valley. Crews are pouring concrete for the final sections of roadway on the west side of Martin Luther King Jr at the future bus layover and comfort station between E Harrison St and E Arthur Pl. Access to E Arthur Pl, west of Martin Luther King Jr is open via 27th Ave E and E Thomas St. Southbound 28th Ave remains closed on the north side of E Madison St to drivers while we complete utility and sidewalk work. Vehicle access to northbound 28th Ave from E Madison St remains open. When complete, it will mark the end of major roadway work on the project.

What we’ve completed in the past month

  • We demolished and hauled off 1,370 square yards of old pavement.
  • We trucked in and placed 1,190 tons of gravel base course.
  • We poured and finished 1,024 square yards of new concrete roadway panels.
  • We poured and finished 735 square yards of new concrete sidewalks.
  • We trenched and installed 5,503 feet of underground electrical conduit.

The RapidRide G – Madison St project recently hit the 80% completion mark!

King County Metro bus stop & relocations

As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Transit Alerts

Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like Google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, Google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at (206) 553-3000.

A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:

  • The Route 8 is rerouted in Madison Valley because of roadwork on E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr. This route is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring.
  • The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
  • Please see the section above about additional bus detours due to an emergency response for a building fire at 9th Ave and Madison St.
  • King County Metro continues to provide shuttle service at Capitol Hill Station in place of the Link Light Rail Line 1 as Sound Transit continues their maintenance work. This work is scheduled to wrap up early next week. When complete, the shuttle service will no longer be necessary.
