Road and Sidewalk Closures Due to Building Fire

There are several street and sidewalk closures on Madison St and 9th Ave due to a recent building fire. These closures are necessary to ensure that people traveling and workers managing the response are safe while the damaged building is removed and the area is restored. Closures and detours may change as the fire response continues and areas can safely be reopened. We will continue to keep people informed of changes and will reopen areas as soon as it is safe to do so.

Current street and sidewalk closures:

  • Madison St is closed between 8th Ave and 9th Ave. Madison St is open for local access to driveways and alleys between 7th Ave and 8th Ave, and between Terry Ave and Boren Ave.
  • Sidewalks on both sides of Madison St are closed between 8th Ave and 9th Ave. Pedestrian access is maintained to building entrances as determined safe (see map).
  • 9th Ave is open to local access between Madison St and Marion St. Pedestrians and people parking in the Bloodworks garage can enter via Marion St. 9th Ave is also open to local access between Spring St and Madison St. To access this area, people should enter from Spring St. Access to 9th Ave is closed at Madison St.

Construction of the Madison RapidRide G Line continues

We’re working with the contractor to review the remaining construction schedule, adjust the timing of some construction activities, and identify other areas where we can continue safely working to manage any potential delays caused by the fire response.

Construction Updates

We continue to make great construction progress, including recently starting construction of the new center running bus stations. Once the RapidRide G Line project is complete, there will be new red bus lanes from 1st Ave to 18th Ave and 4 new bus stations in the center of the street. These stations are located at 8th Ave, Terry Ave, between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave, and east of 12th Ave.

Left turn restrictions

To support safety and traffic operations once the new bus lanes and center running bus stations are built, we will permanently restrict left turns at many intersections on Madison St from First Hill to Capitol Hill. Visit our webpage for maps that show locations of these turning restrictions.

We’ll start restricting left turns at a few intersections in First Hill as we begin construction of the new center running stations this month. We recently restricted left turns from Madison St to 8th Ave and Terry Ave. As soon as next week, we expect to start restricting left turns from Madison St to Summit Ave and Boylston Ave.

Detours and Closures

Directional closures on 14th Ave between E Madison St and E Union St

There will be directional closures on 14th Ave between E Madison St and E Union St throughout January while we finish electrical and paving work on the south side of the 14th Ave and E Madison St intersection. 14th Ave is now closed to southbound traffic between E Madison St and E Union St. Northbound traffic remains open.

Starting as soon as next week, January 8, we will reopen 14th Ave to southbound traffic and close it to northbound traffic between E Madison St and E Union St. We expect this closure to last about 1 week. 14th Ave will remain open to local access around the closure. Sidewalks will also remain open during the directional closures.

Final partial intersection closure at 19th Ave and E Madison St this weekend

Access to southbound 19th Ave will be closed at E Madison St for one more weekend while we finish repaving the southern half of the intersection. The closure began today at 10 AM and will end by 6 AM on January 8. During this work, 19th Ave south of E Madison St will remain open to local access. People driving northbound on 19th Ave south of E Madison St are not able to access E Madison St. E Madison St remains open to traffic in both directions, and sidewalks remain open. There will be some nighttime work taking place this evening and tomorrow evening. The contractor has obtained a nighttime construction permit. The map below shows the closure area.

Location of closure on 19th Ave and south side of E Madison St

Partial access closure to E Madison St from 18th Ave

Access to E Madison St from 18th Ave is closed on the south side of the intersection. Cars traveling north on 18th Ave cannot access E Madison St. Cars traveling on E Madison St cannot access 18th Ave southbound. This closure is necessary to maintain an accessible pedestrian detour while we complete sidewalk work in the area. We expect that the access closure will continue through late January.

Wrapping up roadwork on Martin Luther King Jr Way

We are nearing the completion of roadwork on Martin Luther King Jr Way. Crews are pouring concrete for the final sections of roadway and we expect to reopen Martin Luther King Jr Way to both directions of traffic by January 16.

What we’ve been working on

Here's what we accomplished in the month of December:

  • We placed and compacted 1,455 tons of mineral aggregate base course.
  • We formed and poured 1,810 square yards of new cement concrete roadway panels.
  • We planted 26 new trees. We're looking forward to watching the plant life bloom in spring!
  • We formed and poured 503 feet of new concrete curb.
  • We formed and poured 718 square yards of new cement concrete sidewalk.
  • We installed 28 new streetlights.
  • We installed 20 new signal heads.
  • We installed 25 new pedestrian push buttons. These installations will help improve pedestrian safety along the Madison St corridor.
  • We trenched and installed 2,762 feet of underground signal and street lighting conduit. That's nearly half of a mile!

The RapidRide G – Madison St project recently hit the 75% completion mark!

King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations

As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Transit Alerts

Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at 206-553-3000.

A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:

  • The Route 8 is rerouted in Madison Valley because of roadwork on E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr. This route is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring.
  • The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
  • Please see the section above about additional bus detours due to an emergency response for a building fire at 9th Ave and Madison St.

What’s coming up next month

The information below is based on a preliminary schedule that is subject to change. Expect daytime work from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday with some night and weekend work. Follow posted signs and detours for safe access through construction zones.
