 Construction Updates
We’re sending our next monthly email in early January. This email update has a few key construction updates about work happening next week
New left turn restrictions for vehicles on Madison St in First Hill
This week, we started construction of the new bus stations located in the middle of the street. Once the RapidRide G project is complete, there will be new red bus only lanes from 1st Ave to 18th Ave and 4 new center-running bus stations on Madison St. These stations are located at 8th Ave, Terry Ave, between Summit Ave and Boylston Ave, and east of 12th Ave. Because of these new red bus only lanes and center-running bus stations, we will be restricting left turns at many intersections on Madison St through First Hill and Capitol Hill.
Left turns from Madison St are already restricted at Terry Ave, and we recently restricted left turns from Madison St to 8th Ave. Starting as soon as January 8, we’ll begin working on the center bus station at Boylston Ave and restrict left turns from Madison St to Summit Ave and Boylston Ave. There will also be crosswalk closures lasting up to 6 weeks at the intersections of 8th Ave, Terry Ave, Summit Ave and Boylston Ave while we build the new center bus stations.
Upcoming directional closures on 14th Ave between E Madison St and E Union St
There will be directional closures on 14th Ave for 1 block starting in early January while we finish electrical and paving work on the south side of the 14th Ave and E Madison St intersection. Starting on January 2, 14th Ave will close to southbound traffic between E Madison St and E Union St. Northbound traffic will remain open. We expect the closure to last 1 week.
Starting as soon as January 8, we plan to reopen southbound access and restrict northbound access between E Madison St and E Union St. This closure is also expected to last for 1 week. 14th Ave will remain open to local access around the work area. Sidewalks will also remain open.
Partial intersection closure at 19th Ave and E Madison St the weekend of January 5
Access to southbound 19th Ave will be closed at E Madison St for one more weekend while we finish repaving the southern half of the intersection. The closure is expected to begin at 10 AM on Friday, January 5 and finish by 6 AM on January 8. During this work, 19th Ave south of E Madison St will remain open to local access. People driving northbound on 19th Ave south of E Madison St will not be able to access E Madison St. E Madison St will remain open to traffic in both directions, and sidewalks will remain open. There will be some nighttime work on the evenings of January 5 – 6, and the contractor has obtained a nighttime construction permit. The map below shows the closure area.
Partial intersection closures in Madison Valley
Access to E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way is closed on some local streets in Madison Valley while we finish repaving the intersection of E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way. Southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way remains closed to vehicles while we finish repaving the street. We anticipate completing the remaining paving work and re-opening these roads by mid-January.
-
Access to E Arthur Pl and E Harrison St west of Martin Luther King Jr Way is closed at MLK. These streets remain open to local access from 27th Ave.
-
Access to E Madison St from southbound 28th Ave is closed. Cars can still travel northbound from E Madison St to 28th Ave.
The map below shows the locations of these access closures.
Bus shelter installation
We continue to install new bus shelters in areas where sidewalk work is complete. We're installing many of these shelters at night to reduce impacts during peak travel time. The contractor has obtained the required nighttime noise variance permits to perform this work. We plan to install shelters at the following locations in early January:
- 3rd Ave and Madison St on January 2
- E Denny Way and E Madison St on January 3
- 23rd Ave E and E Madison St on January 5
King County Metro Bus Stop Closures & Relocations
As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.
Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at 206-553-3000.
A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:
-
The Route 8 is rerouted in Madison Valley because of roadwork on E Madison St and MLK. This reroute is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring of next year.
-
The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
