Construction Updates
Construction of the Madison - RapidRide G project is 75% complete! The three-quarter milestone is a major achievement for the project as we move closer and closer to the beginning of service in 2024. If you’ve traveled on the Madison St corridor lately, you may have seen many of the final project elements starting to take shape. This includes:
New bus shelters
We’ve started installing the frames for new bus shelters in downtown. Over the next several months, you'll see more of these frames start to be built. Next year, we’ll come back and install the glass walls, roofs, and other bus stop amenities.
Crews installing the new RapidRide bus shelter near 5th Ave and Madison St downtown
New signals
All along the corridor, we’ve been installing new signals and upgrading old traffic signals. Earlier this month, we activated new signals at the intersections of Terry Ave and Madison St and at Spring and 8th Ave. You may have noticed new signal poles and mast arms at different points along Madison St. We will continue to make progress by installing new lights, signage, and hooking up new traffic signals over the next several months.

New trees and landscaping
Green shoots coming to the RapidRide G – Madison St project, literally! We’ve been planting new trees and installing landscaping in areas where the sidewalk work is complete. We’re wrapping up work for this planting season and will continue planting trees and landscaping next spring.
New tree landscaping on Madison St
Completed most street markings downtown, including new bike and bus lanes
Earlier this fall, we finished painting new bike and bus only lanes on Spring St downtown. We also added posts to the bike lane to improve safety for people biking. The new bus lanes will help improve reliability for transit and future RapidRide G buses.

Making progress sidewalk and roadway work
We’ve made significant progress on rebuilding the road and sidewalks throughout the project corridor. We’re wrapping up most of the final road paving and have built many new blocks of sidewalks in downtown, First Hill, and Capitol Hill. Remaining road paving and sidewalk work will continue into next year.

Detours and closures
9th Ave between Spring St and Madison St is closed to southbound traffic
The directional closure to vehicles is needed while we finish our road and sidewalk work on the street. We anticipate the re-opening 9th Ave in both directions by March 2024. Access to the driveways on the northbound side of the street is open, with the exception of weekend closures when we pave in front of the driveways (more info below in the What's Coming Up section).
Spring St will be restricted to eastbound traffic only at 9th Ave
Starting in mid-December, we need to restrict Spring St to eastbound only traffic east of the intersection of 9th Ave. We'll be working on the sidewalks at the corners of the intersection and Spring St is not wide enough to keep both directions of traffic open. Local access on Spring St between Terry Ave and 9th Ave will remain open. We expect the directional closure to be in place for 3-4 weeks.
13th Ave between E Pike St and E Madison St is closed to southbound traffic
We’re working on building a new curb bulb at the corner of 13th Ave and E Madison St. While we do this work there is not enough room at the intersection to keep both directions of traffic open. 13th Ave is northbound-only between E Madison and E Pike St through the end of the year. Vehicles can still access the parking lot and loading zone on the west side of the street by traveling northbound.
Partial weekend closures at the intersection of 19th Ave and E Madison St
We will soon return to the intersection of E Madison St and 19th Ave to finish installing electrical equipment and repaving the south side of the intersection. There will be partial intersection closures during the work, which will occur over 3 weekends. The first weekend closure will take place Dec. 9 and 10. During this work, access to southbound 19th Ave will be closed at E Madison St. E Madison St will remain open in both directions, and 19th Ave south of E Madison St will remain open to local access. Sidewalks will also remain open, and there will be a signed detour for people driving.
Southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way closed between E Madison St and E Harrison St
Earlier this week, we began work in the southern area of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Way and E Madison St and along the center of Martin Luther King Jr Way from E Madison St to E Harrison St. This work involves removing older roadway panels, installing new utility conduits, and repaving the roadway surface. Southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way is closed to vehicles from E Madison St to E Harrison St. We expect this work and the road closure to continue through January 2024.
During this work, be advised of the following:
-
Southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way is closed between E Madison St and E Harrison St.
-
E Madison St will remain open to traffic in both directions.
-
Some parking restrictions around the work area on E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way.
-
Sidewalks will remain open and access to businesses will be maintained.
-
The Route 8 bus will continue on the existing re-route during this roadwork.
Starting on Monday, December 5, access to E Harrison St and E Arthur Pl will be closed on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr Way
The closure is necessary while we rebuild the road at these intersections. Access to E Harrison St and E Arthur Pl will remain open at 29th Ave E. We expect the closure to be in place for about 1 week. During this portion of the work, E Arthur Pl will be converted to two-way traffic between 29th Ave E and Martin Luther King Jr Way. Some parking towards the end of the block will be restricted to allow vehicles to turn around. Please see the map below for the locations of the access closures:
Location of closures and permitted two-way traffic during closure
What we’ve been working on
We continue to make steady progress and thank everyone for their continued patience during construction. Here’s what we accomplished in the month of November.

-
Formed, poured, and finished 3,967 square yards of new concrete roadway panels.
-
Installed 521 feet of new concrete curb. That's almost as tall as the Space Needle!
-
Formed, poured, and finished 868 square yards of new concrete sidewalks.
-
Installed 115 new traffic signs (and relocated 27 existing signs to new posts).
-
Installed 10 luminaires (street lights).
-
Installed 79 new vehicle and pedestrian signal heads and 24 pedestrian push buttons.
-
Installed 24 new signal and light poles.
-
Installed 23 new Metro trolley poles.
-
Trenched and installed 4,302 feet of new underground signal and street lighting conduit.
The RapidRide G – Madison St project now sits at 75% completion!
King County Metro bus stop closures & relocations
As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.
Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at 206-553-3000.
A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:
-
The Route 8 is rerouted in Madison Valley because of roadwork on E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr. This route is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring of next year.
-
The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
