Construction Updates

We’re sending our next monthly email next week. This email update has a few key construction updates about work happening next week.

E Pike St will soon be one-way westbound between 14th Ave and E Madison St

We’re continuing roadwork on E Pike St between 14th Ave and E Madison St. We expect to complete this roadwork as soon as the end of next week. Once roadwork is complete, this section of E Pike St will become one-way westbound. We’ll continue working in the area to finish rebuilding the sidewalks and repaving the south side of the intersection of E Madison St and 14th Ave.

Southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way to close temporarily between E Madison St and E Harrison St

Starting as soon as Monday, November 27, we’ll begin roadwork on the SE corner of the intersection of E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way, and on Martin Luther King Jr Way between E Madison St and E Harrison St. We’ll be demolishing the roadway, trenching and installing electrical conduit, and repaving the street. During this work, southbound vehicle access on Martin Luther King Jr Way between E Madison St and E Harrison St will be closed. E Madison St will remain open to vehicles in both directions. We expect the southbound closure of Martin Luther King Jr Way will continue through January 2024.

If you are traveling in in the area, be advised of some temporary closures and impacts:

  • Southbound Martin Luther King Jr will be closed between E Madison St and E Harrison St.
  • Drivers heading northbound on Martin Luther King Jr Way will be able to turn left or right onto E Madison St.
  • Drivers on E Madison St will not be able to turn on to southbound Martin Luther King Jr Way. There will be signed detours.
  • Some parking along E Madison St will be restricted in the area next to the intersection of E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way to make space for passing traffic. There will also be parking restrictions on Martin Luther King Jr Way in the construction area.
  • Sidewalks will remain open and access to businesses will be maintained.
  • The Route 8 bus will continue on the existing re-route during this roadwork.

As soon as late next week or early in the week of December 11, access to E Harrison St and E Arthur Pl will be closed at Martin Luther King Jr Way. The closure is necessary while we rebuild the road at these intersections. We expect the closure to be in place for about 1 week. During this portion of the work, E Arthur Pl will be converted to two-way traffic. Some parking towards the end of the block will be restricted to allow vehicles to turn around. Please see the map below for the locations of the access closures:

We will share more information about this road work in our regular monthly email update. Please contact us if you have any questions about this work or the closures.

King County Metro Bus Stop Closures & Relocations

As construction continues, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Transit Alerts

Did you know? People with accessibility needs can book a trip using Metro Access. You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, google will alert you there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops. If you have questions, you can reach King County Metro customer service at 206-553-3000.

A few of the longer-term bus reroutes include:

  • The Route 8 is rerouted in Madison Valley because of roadwork on E Madison St and MLK. This reroute is likely to remain detoured in this area into the spring of next year.
  • The Route 2 continues to be rerouted through Capitol Hill. We are working on restoring this route to its original path in phases. We are aiming to return the eastbound Route 2 by the end of the year and the westbound Route 2 in early spring of 2024.
