Levy to Move Seattle Program Spotlight

Program 27: Bike Parking and Bike Spot Improvements Program

Our Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Install 1,500 new bicycle parking spots citywide and maintain existing bike facilities. Install other biking and walking investments. In the 2018 Workplan Update Report, we noted that we anticipated completing 1,500 new bike parking spaces by the end of 2019 and we outlined an annual target of 10 bike spot safety improvements.

With all the new bike lanes around town, we need to make more spaces for people to park their bikes and make sure those bike facilities continue to be safe and predictable.

Let’s start with bike parking. To-date, we have added 1,612 new bike parking spaces! We met our goal of installing 1,500 spaces by the end of 2019.

Building bike parking on the street frees up sidewalk space for people of all ages & abilities to get around. Installing bike parking in the curb space adjacent to crosswalks has practical use and public safety benefit, primarily because this makes people driving, walking, and biking more visible. All in all, installing bike parking supports safer, easier, more comfortable mobility options.

This year, we are working on partnerships with schools for more bike parking for kids!

Now, onto bike spot improvements! Since 2016, we have also made 75 improvements for the safety and mobility of people biking.

Some of the projects we’ve completed in 2022 include:

  • Duwamish River Trail vegetation trimming and surface clearing
  • Mountains to Sound Trail signage upgrades
  • Queen Anne Ave N and W Republican St protected bike lane post upgrade for safety near a driveway
  • Chief Sealth Trail sign upgrade at a crossing to enhance trail wayfinding and limit vehicular confusion
  • Repaving Beacon Ave S Path
  • Signs and log barrier on Chief Sealth Trail to prevent vehicle traffic on trail

Also, have you heard about our Even Better Bike Lanes? Supported by this Levy program, we are pilot testing new materials to better separate people rolling, scooting, and biking from traffic. This year we tested these materials to improve bike lanes on NE 40th St, N 9th St, S Columbian Way, and S Dearborn St.
