Redmond City Council Approves New Projects for Community Facilities District

REDMOND, WA - Yesterday, Redmond City Council approved an amendment to the Redmond Community Facilities District (CFD) to add new projects. The amendment passed by a 7-0 vote during their regularly scheduled business meeting on Sept. 17. Through the CFD, Redmond and Microsoft will partner to fund improvements to transportation infrastructure that will make transportation safer and more efficient for everyone.

"Building multimodal infrastructure that is safe and accessible for all Redmond residents is essential to achieving our vision of a complete city where everyone can thrive,” said Mayor Angela Birney. “Microsoft’s partnership with Redmond has helped to accomplish more of this vital work quickly, and their continued investment in our community is deeply appreciated."

The new projects approved for the CFD include extending existing shared-use paths, improving ADA ramps and crosswalk push buttons at various locations, improving and connecting existing bike lanes, installing adaptive signal controls, more accessibility features at the Redmond Technology Station, and potentially building a grade-separated path for pedestrians and bikes along the west side of SR 520.

Additional details on the new projects:

  • Extend the shared-use path on the south side of NE 40th Street from 163rd Avenue NE to 172nd Avenue NE, replacing the current sidewalk on that side of the street which is currently not ADA-compliant.
  • Improve ADA ramps and push-button activation for crosswalks at select locations to be determined.
  • Install adaptive traffic signal controls at multiple intersections along 148th Avenue NE, 156th Avenue NE, and NE 40th Street in the Overlake neighborhood.
  • Enhance bike lanes with improved curve design and completion of bike lane gaps along 150th Avenue NE. This project will complete missing bike lane connections near the Nintendo campus at the 4500 block and at the intersection with NE 51st Street. Work will include pavement widening, new curb and gutter, and associated stormwater improvements.
  • Accessibility features at the Redmond Technology Station could include timetable displays with text-to-speech functionality and tactile guidance indicators to assist those with visual impairments in navigating the site.

Past CFD projects included the Redmond Technology Station pedestrian and bicycle bridge, intersection improvements at 154th Avenue NE and NE 51st Street, 156th Avenue NE and NE 51st Street, and 156th Avenue NE and NE 31st Street, as well as bike lanes along NE 31st Street and stormwater improvements along NE 40th Street which will help protect salmon.
