A facility designed to protect our community and the environment
This new facility makes it easier for residents in North Kitsap, Poulsbo, and Bainbridge Island to properly dispose of household hazardous waste, helping protect our homes, community, and environment.
Kevin Bevelhimer, Solid Waste Program Manager, highlighted the need for the new facility, saying, "For years, North Kitsap residents relied on occasional one-day events or traveled more than 40 minutes to the South Kitsap Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility to safely dispose of paint, cleaners, and other chemicals. With this new facility, we're expanding access to an essential service and giving residents a convenient way to keep their families and homes safe from unwanted chemicals."
Inside the facility, specially trained staff collect, sort, and package hazardous waste. Licensed hazardous waste contractors then pick up the waste and transport it to approved recycling and disposal sites outside of Kitsap County for proper treatment and management.
Local health regulations prohibit the disposal of any hazardous waste into the garbage, down sinks or storm drains, onto the ground, or into waterways.
Kitsap County began planning for a North Kitsap household hazardous waste facility as early as 2007, when it conducted an initial feasibility study. Construction began in September 2025 and cost $13 million. The facility is located on the same property as the county's new roads operations facility, which will house the equipment and personnel responsible for maintaining North Kitsap roads.
Features of the facility
-
Reuse Shop: Residents can pick up free, reusable household products like leftover paint and automotive products in the Reuse Shop during operating hours.
-
State-of-the-art safety and containment systems: The facility is designed to protect staff and the community from risks associated with hazardous chemicals. It incorporates engineered secondary containment features and automated fire-response mechanisms.
-
Loading dock: The loading dock increases safety while unloading larger items from residents and Small Quantity Generator customers.
-
Backup generator: The backup generator provides reliable power to automated safety systems, ensuring they stay fully functional and ready to activate in the event of an emergency. It also allows us to continue to operate the facility during minor power outages.
The facility was designed with sustainability in mind. The building features energy-efficient lighting and heating systems that reduce energy consumption and operational costs, while lowering our environmental footprint. Outside, the landscaping incorporates native plants and bioswales, which supports the local ecosystem and naturally manages stormwater.
