Olympic View Transfer Station will resume normal operations on Monday, March 3
The Olympic View Transfer Station will resume normal operations on Monday, March 3, 2025, following two days of closure caused by a garbage compactor outage.
The Recycling and Garbage Facilities will also resume normal operations on Monday, March 3.
New garbage compactors coming soon
Olympic View Transfer Station uses a garbage compactor to fill large intermodal containers with garbage collected from homes and businesses. The containers are then transported by rail to the Columbia Ridge Landfill in Arlington, Oregon.
The current compactor is over ten years old and is nearing its end-of-life, which causes frequent outages and facility closures. This year, Kitsap County will take two steps to correct this issue:
- We will install a second garbage compactor, which is already on-site. Installation is scheduled for early summer 2025.
- After the second compactor is installed, we will replace the current compactor. We have already purchased this machine, which costs around $5 million and takes eight months to manufacture. We expect to receive it later this year.
