BPA- & BPS-Free Paper Pilot Program ended June 30, 2025
Did you know that you may be exposing yourself to toxic chemicals when you touch a cash register receipt?
Bisphenols are chemicals that may be found in cash register receipts and can have negative health hazards. Starting January 1, 2026, Bisphenol-container thermal paper will not be allowed for sale, manufacture, or distribution in Washington State.
Although many businesses are switching to safer products, there are many ways you can reduce your customers and staff potential exposure:
- Avoid handing out receipts – ask customers if they need a receipt before printing
- Go paperless – encourage the use of digital e-receipts
- Switch to bisphenol-free receipt paper (BPA & BPS-free paper)
Between September 2024 through June 2025, the City of Kirkland visited over 120 businesses, and if interested in becoming bisphenol-free, we provided ten (10) FREE rolls of bisphenol-free paper. Over 100 rolls of bisphenol-free paper have been distributed. We have asked these businesses to purchase bisphenol-free paper in the future. Several businesses have made the commitment, including Amente Pizza & Pasta, Mongolian Grill, Las Garnachas, Birrieria Tijuana, and Hello Banh Mi (photo above).
More information can be found on the City of Kirkland Storm and Surface water webpage (Business Pollution Prevention).

The City Wants to Hear from You: Homelessness in Kirkland
Over recent months, the City has engaged the community to inform a draft Homelessness Continuum of Care Action Plan to guide its response to homelessness in Kirkland. As staff works to finalize and deliver a plan to Council by the end of the year, Kirkland business owners—retail/storefronts, office-based businesses and landlords—are invited to (re)engage in a conversation about how homelessness impacts your Kirkland business today and what the City should consider in its ongoing response. You can provide your input in the following ways:
- Join a forum hosted by City staff and geared toward economic development, workforce and education representatives in Kirkland on September 9, 3-4:30 p.m. by registering here.
- Provide feedback on the City’s DRAFT plan at your convenience, with this survey link.
- Request an individual meeting with City staff by reaching out to communications@kirklandwa.gov.
Thank you for considering lending your voice to this process.
