In response to the ongoing need for food security and hunger relief during the federal government shutdown, Executive Shannon Braddock issued the following statement:
“The ongoing government shutdown has threatened the health and well-being of individuals and families, particularly those who rely on federal funding and programs for food security. I am heartened to see how strongly our region and state have responded to support those at risk of losing SNAP benefits, from individuals and community organizations to businesses and local governments. Their compassion and support show the strength of our communities during these uncertain times.
Here in King County, we recognize the importance of addressing this issue, which is why I proposed $4 million in my biennial budget to support food security. It is also why we partnered with the City of Seattle to create a $2 million contingency plan for King County residents receiving Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits when those were at risk of running out last month.
More immediately, I am directing $200,000 in discretionary funding to support 15 food banks located in our unincorporated areas, where King County serves as the local government. I have also encouraged all King County employees to consider a donation to their local food bank as part of our 2025 Annual Giving Drive. Last year, King County employees generously donated nearly $2.4 million in support of our communities. These investments will help us continue to support those who need hunger relief and food security as the shutdown continues.
I recognize that these short-term actions are only temporary fixes and not solutions to the problems created by the federal government. But we must work together to support those who face these challenges. I am thankful to Governor Ferguson and other local governments who are stepping in to fund programs here in Washington, and I plan to continue to work with the King County Council and our departments to see where we can best support the families impacted by the loss of these critical benefits.
I am hopeful that the Trump administration will at least move forward with partially funding SNAP this month, as announced earlier today. But the truth is, our residents shouldn’t have to face this uncertainty. We urge the federal government to end this shutdown and return to the work of serving the people.”
