King County Executive Shannon Braddock issued the following statement after the County Council approved a measure for the August ballot to renew the King County Parks Levy:
“The King County Council and our city partners have demonstrated their shared commitment to maintaining and enhancing the parks, trails, and open spaces that keep us healthy and connected. The people of King County have sent us a clear and consistent message: They want us to expand access to outdoor recreation and uphold our promise as stewards of these special places. Our proposal for the August ballot is designed to achieve both.
“This is our opportunity to increase King County Parks’ capacity for maintenance and safety, enhance sports fields, playgrounds, and aquatic centers, protect more open space for a growing population, and accelerate the expansion of regional trails.”
The current 6-year levy, which generates about 85% of King County Parks’ budget, will expire at the end of the year. It funds one of the nation’s largest metropolitan park agencies, stewarding more than 250 parks, 185 miles of regional trails, 215 miles of backcountry trails, and 32,000 acres of open space.
