DCYF Statement on Arrest of Young Person who Previously Eloped
The following is our agency statement providing clarifying information that was included in Seattle Police Department's recent press release:
"There was no escape from Green Hill School."
"The young person arrested by Seattle Police was an individual who had eloped from the Twin Rivers Community Facility on Jan. 16 during a routine appointment at a local hospital."
"DCYF staff worked with hospital staff to review security footage and were able to confirm the young person left the hospital and got into a vehicle. DCYF staff notified local law enforcement and issued warrants."
"When a young people elopes from a community facility or parole, the warrant is issued out of Green Hill. It does not mean they escaped from Green Hill."
"Young people at community facilities have different levels of privileges compared to secure facilities. Community facilities are minimum security facilities that do not have any fencing and young people can leave the facility during the day to attend jobs, education, or programming off-site."
"The goal of community facilities is to successfully transition young people back into the community. Young people are transferred to community facilities after meeting eligibility criteria and undergo an approval process that includes an assessment of their risk to the community and their protective factors."
