The City of Walla Walla is updating the name of its Development Services Department to the City of Walla Walla Community Development Department.
The change was approved by the Walla Walla City Council at its Oct. 28, 2026, regular meeting, as part of the 2026 code amendments implementing the 2046 Comprehensive Plan.
The name change reflects the department’s broader mission of supporting the growth, health and long-term vitality of our community. The department’s responsibilities have evolved over time, said Community Development Director Preston Frederickson.
“While the name ‘Development Services’ emphasized serving the development industry, the department’s work goes beyond this focus,” Frederickson said. “The team facilitates community-building in a variety of ways, including administering building and development codes, supporting long-range planning, coordinating community programs, managing code enforcement and facilitating economic-development programs. Centralizing these efforts better reflects the department’s core purpose, which is to help build and maintain a thriving Walla Walla.”
Only the department's name is changing. Services, processes and staff roles remain the same. The same people will continue to provide the same high-quality support to residents, businesses, and developers.
Staff will implement the updated name in the coming weeks. Frequently asked questions about the name change are available on the department’s website.
