"We would never tell someone with a broken leg that they should stop wallowing and get it together. We don’t consider taking medication for an ear infection something to be ashamed of. We shouldn’t treat mental health conditions any differently.”

A great, big, loud, boisterous round of applause is in order for the students, teachers and staff of Terminal Park Elementary School, because they just DONATED $4,000 TO THE AUBURN FOOD BANK!
Those funds were made possible thanks to a generous gift from Wellpoint in Auburn, which allocated $4,000 to an Auburn School District school that exceeded the goal of 75% of parents and staff watching our R.E.A.D.Y. for KIDS video.
Together, they all came forward and brought more attention and awareness around mental wellness to the City of Auburn, contributing to nearly 22,000 views on the video this past year!
We created those videos for this exact purpose – to reduce the stigma, to get people talking, and to make people comfortable asking for help, no matter their age. I hope everyone reading this knows there is always someone you can talk to.
So again, congratulations Terminal Park, and thank you all for your help! Keep up the amazing work! Terminal Park Tigers…..You Are Great!
I had the good fortune of meeting Ziva, a 4th grader at Terminal Park Elementary, right before the R.E.A.D.Y. assembly Wednesday afternoon. Ziva's mother told me that her daughter would not let her leave the school for an appointment without meeting "the mayor." I was so honored!
She also told me her name means "light of God."
While I only got to spend a few minutes with Ziva and her mother, I have to say, I couldn't agree more! Ziva was so confident and composed and curious and I was told she even wanted to be mayor at Junior Achievement's City Hall in BizTown. And while she had to be a CEO instead (not to worry -- they make much more money!), she still appreciated all of the work the mayor had to do.
Ziva also wants to be a doctor one day -- and a teacher. A teaching doctor, perhaps. I think she'll have no problem accomplishing that!
On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to tour Dylan Aerospace with representatives from Greater Seattle Partners. A huge thank you to General Manager Timothy Temple for a very informative tour and discussion! The company employs around 32 very talented people who are working on parts for companies like The Boeing Company, and the precision that is required is amazing. The machinery is running 24 hours a day and everyone there was so proud of their work and the attention they pay to detail. Dylan Aerospace is in Auburn on Pike St NW, and you wouldn’t even know it’s there, unless you knew it was there. We have so many gems like this in Auburn with great family wage jobs.
If your business would like to be highlighted, contact my office 253-931-3041, and we can set up a meeting. I love hearing about the great companies that call Auburn home!
Get your appetites ready because a variety of mouthwatering food trucks are hitting the streets of downtown Auburn this spring and summer.
Each week on Tuesdays around lunchtime from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from April 29 through the end of August, come on down to City Hall Plaza, 25 W. Main Street, for a weekly lunch featuring an assortment of local vendors. Take a short walk, grab a bite, and enjoy the sun – meet us downtown and enjoy all that Auburn has to offer at Food Truck Tuesdays!
Food Truck Tuesdays is part of a partnership between the City of Auburn and the Washington State Food Truck Association, because food trucks mean options, and options bring people to places. More people in downtown brings more eyes and foot traffic to our local businesses (always our goal), increasing customer base and options.
This food truck program is also part of the new planning initiative called “Auburn is Creative” and aligns with Auburn’s strategic economic development goals by promoting the city’s ongoing support for small business, and showcasing how mobile food establishments can enliven the community and bring people together.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 29 and beyond and keep an eye out on our city social media channels for truck options throughout the season -- and we'll see you downtown at City Hall Plaza!

Next Saturday is National Sikh Day and April is National Sikh History Month, a time to recognize the holiest Sikh holiday Vaisakhi, one of the most religiously significant days in Sikh history. It commemorates the creation of the Khalsa, a fellowship of devout Sikhs.
Sikhism is the fifth largest world religion with approximately 30 million Sikhs worldwide, including over 1 million in the United States. The City of Auburn recognizes the diversity of our community and afford all residents the opportunity to better understand, recognize and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences within.
From the City of Auburn to you, have a joyous Vaisakhi filled with celebration!
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month -- a time to come together as a community, raise our voices, and commit to making a difference.
The 2025 theme, “Together We Act, United We Change,” emphasizes the importance of communities working together to prevent sexual abuse, assault and harassment.
Education is often the first step, and it's a powerful one! By learning more about how to prevent sexual violence, we can shift the way we think, talk, and respond. We can challenge harmful misconceptions, uplift the voices of survivors -- especially those most vulnerable -- and foster a culture that values safety, respect, and accountability.
Join me in our call to action to prevent sexual abuse, assault and harassment in Auburn and the Puget Sound!

The cherry blossoms at Les Gove Park were peaking this week! Hoping you can find the time to view them in person -- they're even more stunning in person.
Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.
(Image courtesy of White River Valley Museum)
W. E. Ester was elected Mayor of Auburn four times, serving eight total years between 1917 and 1933. While he oversaw many important changes in Auburn including a new water system and the renaming of our city streets, he was also occasionally called upon for other areas of expertise.
During a 1919 council meeting, councilmembers were debating whether to ban the popular and controversial dance move called ‘the shimmy’ from Auburn’s dance halls. The local newspaper reported what happened next: “After much explaining in an attempt to ‘wise them up,’ in regard to the method of doing the dance some of the councilmen claimed their ideas on the subject were still too hazy to be tangible, so the mayor, casting aside his official dignity, according to eye witnesses, arose and without so much as a blush of modesty, proceeded to give an excellent version of the ‘shimmy’ -- with such excellence, in fact, several present opined as could only be attained by considerable practice.”
