"I just want to learn about the ins and outs about this city."
-- 2024 Civics Academy participant --
We welcomed a new Civics Academy class last night and I had a great time meeting everyone. We have a wide range of folks in the class - from lifelong residents to some that have only been our been our neighbors for a few months - regardless of how long you've been here I just love it when our residents want to get to know us better and I get to know them as well.
Our first night is what we call Government 101. Our Director of Administration presents to the group the basics of government structures, how Auburn's government is organized and also how we work with our federal, state, county and other local governments to do the people's work.
The program is run out of our Department of Equity, Engagement and Outreach and our new facilitator is Keisha Taylor from that office. She's done a fabulous job organizing the class this year and will look forward to hearing from our participants how they are enjoying the class!
To all of the students, teachers, staff and parents of the Auburn School District - welcome back! I hope your summer was fun and relaxing and as you turn your attention back to your education I urge you to embrace all of the opportunities before you.
A new school year is always fresh start - like a second New Years Day - so I hope you are resolving to do your very best in your classes, activities and personal life. Make some new friends, reconnect with your classmates you haven't seen all summer and when in doubt, choose kindness.
Our Auburn School District holds special place with me. I am a graduate of Auburn High School and so was my daughter Lucky. I can personally attest that our district is filled with incredible students, dedicated teachers, and supportive families. As your Mayor, I am proud of all that you accomplish and excited to see the amazing things you will achieve this year.
Here's to a fantastic school year ahead!
P.S. Remember there are school zone speeding cameras out there. Slow down, tell your friends!
Recently I was speaking to an environmental task force of Auburn residents, business owners and non-profits and I asked them the above question. Here's the notes I took about what they said. I thought you would like to see it too.

Insight Book Workshop @ Postmark
What is an ‘Insight Book,’ and why make one? An Insight Book is a 6 page-book of art, writing and mixed media. You don’t have to be an artist to make one, all you need are opposable thumbs and a willingness to explore lines as they spark ideas. Insight Books exercise the associative muscles of our minds, promoting creativity and problem solving. As you work on your book, you naturally move into a meditative, creative place of inspiration and expression. Making an Insight Book is often therapeutic, tapping into feelings, issues, memories, hopes and dreams. When you’re done, you hold a book in your hands. Your Insight Book.
