"I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this."
- Susan Branch -
We unveiled the newest mural at the Auburn Municipal Airport on Monday, a beautiful piece of art created by artist Myron Curry, whose previous work you’ve probably already noticed on the other hangars around the airport.
Thank you to Airport Manager Tim Mensonides for organizing the ceremony and for all the attendees who made it special. I want to especially thank the family of Colonel Joe Jackson: his daughter Bonnie Jackson, and son David Jackson, his grandchildren Amanda and Jeff Carlson and his Great Grandchildren Lea Rose Jackson and Abi Osborne.
I also want to thank McChord Air Force Base Commander Colonel David Morales, and the McChord Staff Color Guard.
And last but not least, the Auburn-area veterans. This mural is in honor of you -- your courage, your dedication, and your sacrifice to this country.
The third-annual Juneteenth celebration at Les Gove Park will feature Senator John Lovick and a community concert from Ghanaian drum team Anokye Agofomma – in addition to many other performers and speakers – as the city celebrates and honors the history and significance of Juneteenth.
The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 23, at Les Gove Park, near the Auburn Community and Event Center. The Auburn Farmers Market will take place at the same time and place, just down the pathway at Les Gove on the park's southern end. This year, Juneteenth will feature over 100 food and craft vendors, including the Original Phillys, Spooky Dogs, Soul Fusion, Delfino’s Chicago Style Pizza, and more.
Bring your blankets and chairs!

The flag is flying high at City Hall!
Thank you, Auburn, for attending the Juneteenth flag-raising on Monday! In 30, 40 years, we'll look back at weeks like this, at traditions beginning from nothing, with pride and joy, knowing we started something special.
Miss Auburn Maddy Lindsay and Miss Auburn's Teen Maddie McCarthy joined me this week for a very special episode of That's So Auburn! podcast. Learn about the Miss America organization, the amazing scholarship and community service opportunities, and how the Maddies plan to use their platform to change the world for the better. Listen below or wherever you get your podcasts.
Maddy and Maddie are officially goodwill ambassadors for the city!
Speaking of the Maddies, on Monday's City Council meeting I proclaimed Miss Auburn Maddy Lindsay and Miss Auburn's Teen Maddie McCarthy Goodwill Ambassadors for the City of Auburn, a special designation recognizing them for all their accomplishments and extending our best wishes in making their year of service exceptional.
The Miss Auburn & Miss Auburn’s Teen Program is a steppingstone to Miss America. The goal of the organization is to develop future leaders and assist them in furthering their scholarship earnings, speaking skills and personal development by preparing them for state and national competitions.
We are very proud of Maddy and Maddie and know both these amazingly smart, talented young women will represent Auburn successfully with the goals of becoming the next Miss Washington or Miss Washington’s Teen!

Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.

Auburn’s aerospace history didn’t start with the Boeing plant – Rohr Industries led the way when they opened their Auburn plant in 1957 to create parts for the Boeing 707 aircraft. Rohr would continue to be a highly visible employer in Auburn for the next 35 years, expanding its industrial services and community services like this group of Rohr participating in the 1962 Century 21 beautification projects in South Auburn.
