The Kids Came to Work

We had a slew of our employee's kids at City Hall this week for the annual "Bring Your Child to Work Day" and we all had a fantastic time! Our Human Resources department has turned this day into an amazing event and all of our departments make sure that our young visitors feel welcomed, have a lot of fun and of course PIZZA!

Who knows? Maybe we have future engineer, police officer or recreation coordinator that is interested in being a public servant or even a future mayor! I want to extend my gratitude to all of our employees that made this day special for all of us.

Poetry @ the Postmark

Poetry nights are returning to Auburn! The City of Auburn is hosting a poetry reading series on the first Wednesday of each month at Auburn's new Postmark Center for the Arts on Auburn Avenue.

We hope you can join us at the Postmark - bring a poem for the open mic!

Stop by the Postmark for our Make & Mingle session! Join us for a cup of coffee with whatever art project you might be working on. A free, no-pressure environment for artists and creatives to gather... you can talk with other artists, ask for feedback or critique from on-site staff if available, bring your sketchbook to work out ideas, or just quietly draw in the gallery or work on your art! Auburn is rich with history — from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum — I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.

My, what big hair you have

The beehive hairstyle was invented in 1960 and became one of the most iconic fashions of the decade, as modeled in this photo of the Ishihara family. Despite its size, the hairstyle was actually intended to be low maintenance and to last for a week or more when properly wrapped overnight. Modern tools like hairspray joined ancient hair techniques like teasing to let women reach as high as they pleased, and paved the way for future big-hair trends in the 1980s.
