Keeping Auburn Beautiful
|

|
We had another fabulous turnout at our annual Clean Sweep event. Miss Auburn and former Seattle Seahawks player, Thomas Rawls, joined us too. Thank you to all the volunteers and groups such as members of Satguru Ram Singh Satsang, Latino Unidos, TREAD 3219 Auburn High FIRST Robotics Team, Merrill Gardens, Auburn RIverside Key Club, Auburn Police Department, REVIVE, Downtown Auburn Cooperative, Avery Huffman DIPG Foundation, and so many, many more families, groups and individuals who took the time out of their Saturday to help us keep Auburn beautiful! I am always so proud to see how many are willing to share in this work. It’s just one more reason to love our hometown.

From Washington State to Washington D.C.
This week, I had the wonderful opportunity of joining my Pierce County colleagues at the 36th Annual Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber Washington to Washington, D.C. Conference in our nation’s capital. We came together to discuss a variety of topics including the infrastructure needs for South King County and North Pierce County cities. I presented on the priorities for our city, including expanding transit options, improving our regional coordination with transit services across the Puget Sound, and focusing improvement on areas that have been historically underserved. We heard from Senators Murray & Cantwell, Congressmen Rick Larsen and Derek Kilmer, and Congresswomen Marilyn Strickland and Kim Schrier, as they assured us that there is much more bipartisan coordination and support than we sometimes see in the media (whew!). We heard about supply chain issues - no surprise to any of us who shop or have tried to do home improvements over the past two years, as well as talk of “where do we go from here?”
Most of Auburn is in King County, but over 10,000 of our great residents are in the Pierce County portion of our city. There are challenges of working with two county governments, but I can assure you that the benefits far outweigh the risks.
Empty Bowls with the Auburn Food Bank
Empty Bowls—a fundraiser for the Auburn Food Bank—is one of my favorites events to attend annually. I love seeing the beautiful donated ceramics (lots of bowls!) and catching up with our friends from the Food Bank. I have numerous cherished bowls in my house and office from over the years - some on display and some have the distinction of being the favorite cereal bowls for my family. The Auburn Food Bank staff and volunteers do such amazing work in our community to ensure that no one goes hungry. Every bowl purchased today included a cup of gourmet soup, too. I had mulligatawny soup, and it was delicious! If you missed the event this year, visit theauburnfoodbank.org/events to check out other upcoming events or to donate.

Auburn is rich with history—from historical Main Street to the artifacts preserved throughout White River Valley Museum—I am excited to share these stories with all of you each week.

Did you know... The Terminal Park neighborhood in Auburn is named after the western terminus, or end, of the Northern Pacific Railway lines? The railroad donated land and money to create Auburn’s first park in 1913. We have so many beautiful parks in Auburn. What’s your favorite?
