Congratulations! VDOE proudly announced Virginia’s finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award, regarded as the nation’s top honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers, recognizes educators who have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. Congratulations to the following teachers are the 2024 Virginia state finalists: 

  • Jennifer Gates, a science teacher at Randolph Elementary School in Goochland County Public Schools
  • Elizabeth Lynch, a mathematics teacher at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville City Public Schools 
  • Dr. Laurie Sullivan, a Project Discovery Science/STEM teacher at K. W. Barrett Elementary School in Arlington Public Schools

Public Hearing on Revisions to the Standards of Accreditation
The Virginia Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the proposed revisions to the Standards of Accreditation on June 4 at 4 p.m. This revision to the Standards of Accreditation focuses on changes to the accreditation process and the development of a school performance and support framework. Parents, educators, and interested citizens are invited to attend the session and comment. Interested individuals can register to attend and/or speak in the public hearing. VDOE Survey
VDOE Department of Special Populations and its state-funded partners that implement the agency's priorities and initiatives are collecting information from relevant stakeholders about statewide needs to support struggling learners. Survey data will be used to determine priority and focus High-Leverage Practices for future professional development and training. 

VMFA's Teacher Tuesdays at Two
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is offering educator-only tours this summer on select Tuesday afternoons. Educators across disciplines are invited to join VMFA faculty for an education-centered conversation in the galleries. Spend an hour with the VMFA to share your perspective, elevate your practice, and then head to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture to enjoy free educator admission from 3 - 5 p.m.

VCU ACE Evidence-Based Practices Academy
The Virginia Commonwealth University RRTC Autism Center for Education is hosting a two-day Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) Academy on June 3 and 4 in Christiansburg. The EBP Academy is designed to provide educators of students with autism spectrum disorder with direct training in EBP designed to increase access to the general education environment and curriculum. General and special education teachers are invited to come learn how to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and revise classroom management, instructional, and student-specific strategies based on EBP for autistic students to maximize opportunities to learn. Content Teaching Academies 
Join VDOE at the Content Teaching Academies on June 24–27, at James Madison University. The Academies are designed to provide professional development to participating Virginia educators to enhance the outcomes of students with disabilities using high-quality instruction and to promote inclusive practices. For all public school participants, the VDOE will assume the cost of registration, meals, and double-occupancy lodging on JMU’s campus. School divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses for participants as this cost is not assumed by VDOE. Register today!

Virginia War Memorial Summer Professional Development
The Virginia War Memorial is excited to announce that the registration for the Summer 2024 Teacher Institutes is now open!  Options include a one-day professional development session focusing on Connecting Students to History: A Workshop on Research, Writing, and Photography on June 18. The second option is a three-day session on Normandy and Beyond: The Fight for Freedom held July 16-18. These sessions are open to all educators at no cost and teachers are eligible to receive recertification points for daily attendance. Registration is open now.

Artful Thinking at The Fralin
Join educators on June 25, 9-1 p.m. in exploring The Fralin’s collection to support a variety of subject areas and grade levels. Experimenting with and adapting Project Zero’s Thinking Routines, teachers will work together to develop lesson plans that support students in making personal connections with the art and artists as they engage in critical thinking.  Program is free, but space is limited. 

Creative Writing at The Fralin
Join educators and UVA Creative Writing instructors June 26, 9-1 p.m. for a morning of ekphrastic writing inspired by art on view at The Fralin. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This teacher program is free, but space is limited. 

Moton Museum Teacher Institute 2024 - Hybrid Workshop June 26-28 
The Robert Russa Moton Museum and Longwood University are offering a professional learning opportunity for middle and high school teachers to learn about civil rights while earning up to 60 recertification points. This hybrid workshop includes three required on-site days at the Museum and two weeks to complete the online portion. Participants will engage with museum resources and learn from guest facilitators. Meals and lodging are included. Cost: $20. Participants will receive a stipend upon successful completion. More information is available or email Leah Brown.

Initial NBCT Workshop-June 27-29
This workshop is for candidates pursuing their initial National Board Certification. Led by NBCT facilitators, participants spend time dig with certificate requirements and spend time unpacking the foundational elements of the process. Participants gain tips and strategies as they begin their journey toward becoming a NBCT. Registration cost varies based on lodging and VEA membership.  

Current NBCT Workshop- June 28
MOC Jump Start is a one-day workshop for current NBCTs ready to embark on their Maintenance of Certification process. NBCT facilitators will guide participants will gain strategies for success and begin developing their individual plan for completing the one-year MOC process. Registration cost varies based on lodging needs and VEA membership.

WIDA Annual Conference
Registration is open for the 2024 WIDA Annual Conference The in-person event takes place October 16-18, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A virtual track is also available on October 15.  Visit 2024 WIDA Annual Conference to learn more and register.

Celebrate with Authors and Literacy Experts- July 25-26
Longwood's 20th Summer Literacy Institute will be held on campus with the theme, Literacy Aloud. Join young-adult author A.S. King, storyteller and author Donna L. Washington, and authors Lynsey Burkins and Franki Sibberson, in addition to a variety of concurrent sessions celebrating children’s and young adult’s literature. 2024 TechKnowledgy Conference Call for Proposals
The VDOE Assistive Technology Network is planning the 2024 TechKnowledgy Conference which will be held November 18-20 in Harrisonburg. All interested persons are invited to submit proposals for 75-minute breakout sessions held on November 19. Proposals should seek to engage participants in activities to explore and share innovative strategies in assistive technology (AT) for students of all ages and disabilities. Proposals must be received by May 31s placeholder text.

The ME in ImpleMEntation: Supporting Communication and Behavior through AAC
The VCU Autism Center for Education is hosting a series of communication workshops to support educators in their ability to model and teach evidence-based communication strategies for students with autism using high-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Workshops will provide training and hands-on practice using AAC to promote class-wide communication, to address student-specific needs, and to support prosocial behavior. Averett University is now accepting Summer and Fall 2024 applications for our Reading Specialist Endorsement Programs, M.Ed., and Graduate Certificate. All courses are asynchronous. A virtual information session on our Reading Specialist Endorsement programs will take place on May 28 at 4:30 p.m.
