Featurette on the Department of Health Professionals
As a member of the Virginia Longitudinal Data System (VLDS) since 2016, the Department of Health Professions (DHP) Healthcare Workforce Data Center (HWDC) has benefitted greatly from having VLDS data that provide a retrospective look at the healthcare workforce professionals licensed by the agency. Hence, it was a bittersweet celebration when HWDC’s first director, Dr. Elizabeth Carter, who shepherded the center through its onboarding into VLDS, retired after over 30 years with the agency. Dr. Yetty Shobo, the new director of the center, has also been involved with VLDS since the agency joined in 2016. Dr. Barbara Hodgdon, a recent transplant from the Ohio State University, joins her in their plan to continue to the partnership with VLDS and examine life course trajectories that impact the healthcare workforce. The center currently uses VLDS data to examine educational, demographic and economic pre-work characteristics that differentiate becoming a registered nurse versus a licensed practical nurse. The center has also approved VLDS studies by outside researchers examining workforce implications of educational debt on physical therapists in Virginia and using VLDS to study the Virginia health workforce supply.

Webinar 1: How to Design, Build, Abstract, Manipulate, and Analyze Effective VLDS Data Packages: Avoiding Common Errors and Pitfalls
Our experts gave an overview of the VLDS web portal where researchers can retrieve and match data from agency databases, while maintaining the confidentiality of individual information. The presenters went into more detail on data queries (aka data requests), changes to how VLDS provides Unique IDs, data design & planning, matched and unmatched options, column selection, filter selection, error management, and other considerations in this brief webinar training. Webinar 2: On the Move: Educational Instability among Foster Youth
Presenter, Mattie Mackenzie-Liu utilized the VLDS to build upon existing literature in order to define educational instability as student mobility from the larger population of public schoolchildren in K-8 who entered foster care in Virginia between 2012 and 2018. Her research found that 3 in 10 children who enter foster care experience a non-promotional transfer. There was evidence that demographic characteristics, case characteristics, and school characteristics are all independently associated with student mobility. The policy implications involve the recruitment and support for foster parents, and the support for children who do transfer (especially between districts). Dr. Mattie Mackenzie-Liu currently works as a Research Associate at the Urban Institute.
Webinar 3: Using VLDS to Study the Virginia Health Workforce Supply
This study done by Dr. PJ Maddox & Dr. Tammie Jones out of The Mason Center for Health Workforce at GMU aimed at providing an overview on the use of VLDS data to study the supply of health workers in VA. The presenters examined the number of students who enroll in and complete CTE health science, the likelihood that students who participate in CTE Health Science programs go on to higher education in health-related fields, and the likelihood that students who participate in CTE Health Science programs go on to licensed health professions.
