CSMS #45979837 - EPA Compliance Advisory Alert: Imports of Pesticide Products Making Claims to Kill the Coronavirus Causing COVID-19
The purpose of this message is to share a compliance advisory issued in January 2020 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which may have applicability to pesticide products being imported into the United States. Information in the compliance advisory should be shared with importers or their authorized agent, as appropriate.
BACKGROUND The Compliance Advisory was issued to address concerns related to products being used to disinfect surfaces which include claims to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus causing the disease COVID-19. Generally, it is unlawful to distribute or sell pesticides unless they have been properly tested and are registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Unlike chemical pesticides, EPA does not register pesticidal devices, but they are regulated by the EPA and must comply with applicable regulations. It is unlawful to distribute or sell any pesticide or device which is misbranded, including any false or misleading claims made on the labeling. The compliance advisory provides more information and links to helpful websites.
