Council sets balanced budget and protects services important to residents

Exeter City Council has set a balanced budget for the year ahead after the challenges and opportunities facing the authority were outlined during a budget-setting Council meeting.

Council Leader Cllr Phil Bialyk introduced the measures by saying the city faced tough choices in reducing its budget by £3.5 million.

Cllr Bialyk said: “This year we had to find reductions of £3.5 million, which is a lot of money.

“Exeter sets one of the lowest council tax rates for a district council in the country. Only £185 a year for an average band D property goes to the council. We are putting our share up by £5.39 a year.

“From the bill that falls on the mat for homes in Exeter the city council only takes £185, the rest goes to Devon County Council the police and the fire service. Only a small proportion comes to Exeter.”

Schoolchildren thank the Council for keeping Exeter looking great

Primary schoolchildren in Exeter have thanked the City Council for keeping their streets and play areas clean and tidy.

Year 2 pupils at St Thomas Primary School created stunning handmade cards to thank Council staff for the work they do after learning about citizenship.

Kathryn Morgan, Year 2 Teacher and English Lead at St Thomas, said: “The cards were made in one of our PSHE lessons, where the children have been learning about citizenship.

“Our PSHE curriculum at St Thomas is personalised to our school, designed around our school values: Respect, Equality, Aspiration, Community and Harmony. Together, these values support children to REACH for their dreams.

“In our citizenship lessons, I taught the children about the community of our school and our classroom. We worked together to think about what makes a good citizen and how the children can contribute to bettering their classroom and school environment.

She added: “In the next lesson, we linked this to the wider community. We looked at photographs of public places around Exeter and talked about who would be responsible for providing these areas - keeping them clean, making them fun for the children, fixing broken things, etc.

“The children then worked on thank you cards for the city council. It has been wonderful for the children to learn more about the roles different people play in the community and to think about their own roles as citizens of St Thomas, but also Exeter.”

Teach Rex at Exeter Corn Exchange

Friday 18 April

A perfect Easter Holiday treat for the dinosaur lovers in your life.

Teach Rex uses life-like dinosaurs to perform their 1 hour show, teaching children about the anatomy and life of one the most mesmerising creatures that have ever roamed our planet. The show is teamed with effects, music and gives children and their families the chance to get up close and personal with these fantastic, realistic beasts.

Children will be greeted by baby dinosaurs and given a ‘Dino Booklet’ which includes a variety of educational activities. You will also be provided with coloured crayons, all that is included in the price of a ticket, in this educational experience delivered by teachers.

The new show will delve into the jaws of one of the most iconic dinosaurs to ever roam the world, the TREX. Delivered by primary school teachers, the team will take the audience on an interactive, prehistoric journey, pinpointing misconceptions surrounding the TREX and the audience will learn how this iconic beast would have actually looked.

The show is suitable for children of all ages (3+ recommended) and has even proven to be extremely popular with adults. The educational part of the show runs for approximately 1 hour followed by a dinosaur meet and greet when families can get photographs next to the beasts whilst enjoying a dance.
