Exeter City Council’s most-read stories of 2024

Happy New Year to each and every one of you. We hope you had a peaceful Christmas and New Year break.

Over the course of the last 12 months, the City Council published 490 stories on its news website, keeping residents and visitors up-to-date with everything going on in Exeter.

The Communications team at Exeter City Council promotes all of its stories on social media as well as in this weekly newsletter, which is emailed to more than 10,000 people.

The most read story of 2024 was the old Lock Keeper’s Cottage in Topsham becoming available to let. Readers were clearly enchanted by the beauty of this waterside property which became available to rent for outdoor leisure or as a holiday cottage.

Also featuring highly was the Women’s Rugby World Cup and an announcement that Sandy Park and the Exeter had been chosen as a venue and host city for the 2025 tournament.

News that Exeter had been awarded more than £40 million in government funding for a green heating network, also proved popular among readers.

    News broke that Topsham Lock Cottage – nestled idyllically on the banks of the River Exe and right beside the tranquil waters of the Exeter Ship Canal – had become available on the market.
  2. Exeter and Sandy Park chosen as host city for Women’s Rugby World Cup
    Exeter and Sandy Park are one of only eight cities and stadiums to host the international event.
  3. Exeter awarded more than £40m for new green heating network
    The Exeter Energy Network received £42.5 million to build a heat network using air source heat pumps and the UK’s largest high-temperature water source heat pump.
  4. Work underway to demolish former Exeter Bus Station
    News that work on razing the post war buildings to the ground had started.
  5. Donate items to charity with new doorstep collection service
    The City Council partnered up with Anglo Doorstep Collections to offer a doorstep collection service of unwanted clothing, shoes, small electrical items, toys, ornaments, books and more. The items are passed on for reuse where they are really needed, with residents choosing which charity to support.
  6. Food hygiene courses planned throughout 2024 in Exeter
    People were given the opportunity to book on to a number of Royal Society of Public Health accredited courses.
  7. Work to increase biodiversity at beautiful Exeter greenspace gathers pace
    Readers were updated on plans to turn the former Northbrook Golf Course into a tranquil greenspace for people and wildlife.
  8. City Council Election results – 2 May 2024
    News of how voting went in the 2 May elections, as Labour remained in control of the City Council.
  9. Latest designs for new Community Wellbeing Hub in Wonford revealed
    People were given the chance to see what the designs for the new hub would look like. The aspiration to support more people to be healthy, happy and active, is being delivered by the Sport England funded Local Delivery Pilot programmes Live and Move, hosted by the City Council.
  10. Beacon to be lit to mark 80th Anniversary of D-Day
    The Beacon was lit at the King’s Arms Isthmus. Earlier in the day a ceremony was held at the Countess Wear road bridge, which was used for the training of troops ahead of the D-Day landings.
  11. Exeter city centre ready to battle it out in Britain in Bloom competition
    InExeter, the business improvement district for the city, announced its entry in the prestigious competition.
