Developing an Engineering Design Challenge

The Texas Education Agency is pleased to announce the release of a new STEM Toolkit resource, Developing an Engineering Design Challenge.

Engineering design challenges can be created for a specific standard or aligned with multiple standards and subject areas. This tool supports educators in developing cross-curricular engineering design challenges anchored in the science standards. Engineering practices are part of the student expectations in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for science.

Statewide STEM Professional Development

The Texas Education Agency is proud to offer two professional development opportunities designed to strengthen STEM education across the state: Statewide STEM Teacher Training and Statewide STEM Leadership Training.

The Statewide STEM Teacher Training immerses educators in the role of STEM learners, engaging them in high-impact instructional practices such as project-based learning, design-based challenges, and computational thinking. This hands-on experience equips teachers with the tools and confidence to implement meaningful STEM instruction in their classrooms.

Complementing this, the Statewide STEM Leadership Training prepares campus and district administrators to shape, support, and sustain STEM initiatives. Through active participation in the same instructional approaches—project-based learning, design-based challenges, and computational thinking—leaders gain a deeper understanding of how to foster a thriving STEM culture within their schools.

Contact your Education Service Center for the next training date.

Aquilla ISD

The Texas Mobile STEM Laboratory, a program of the Texas Education Agency in partnership with Learning Undefeated, continues to spark excitement and curiosity in students across Texas. During recent visits to schools in Aquilla ISD, Caddo Mills ISD, and Montgomery ISD,  students engaged in the engineering design process while completing engineering design challenges aligned with grade-level content standards.

“Our students haven’t stopped talking about the Texas Mobile STEM Lab visit! They loved it so much they were hoping it could happen every week,” shared a teacher from Aquilla ISD. “We’re so proud to bring experiences like this to Aquilla ISD—proving that even as a small rural school, our students never miss out on big opportunities!”

At Kathy Kirkpatrick Elementary, 1st–4th grade students engaged in hands-on STEM challenges like building catapults and creating wigglebots. These activities combined problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork, bringing classroom concepts to life in a fun and meaningful way.

Madeley Ranch Elementary echoed the enthusiasm: “Our experience with the Texas Mobile STEM Lab was unforgettable! The hands-on activities had our students buzzing with excitement and curiosity, reminding us how fun and inspiring science can be.”

The activities used in the Texas Mobile STEM Laboratory program are available at no cost on the Texas Education Agency website.
