City Employee Veteran Spotlight: Todd Word
City Department
"I work in Development Services in the Strategic Operations section. My primary duties are departmental software support, report creation and maintenance, and liaison between vendors and staff. My main support is the Accela permitting software used by several departments, our citizens, and contractors to build and grow our vast city."
Military Service
United States Navy 1990-1994
Military Occupational Specialties
“I was in the US Navy from 1990 to 1994 (Desert Shield). I served on the FF-1079 USS Bowen stationed out of Norfolk Virginia and then Staton Island. I was an Electricians Mate EM2 (Petty Officer 2nd Class). My duties consisted of Electrical Safety Petty Officer, heat stress monitor, electrical central power plant operator, worked as backup Helo Deck Electrician, and Shipboard Electrician."
Advice for Other Veterans
"Use your benefits that you earned because you served. If you use your GI Bill, make sure they use your time in service and Rate (MOS) to get the college credits. It will shorten your time in college and credits needed to complete your degree. I have also found that working with other vets and volunteering to work with other vets helps once you get out as they understand the lifestyle we were in like no one else, and it helps with day-to-day trials and tribulations."
