Food Safety Training

Virtual

This resource is desinged to assist individuals and groups involved in unsheltered feeding events by providing clear access to training opportunites and compliance requirements. It reflects our ongoing efforts to educate and equip volunteers engaged in charitable street feeding, to promote safe and responsible food handling practices.

Join us for our virtual Food Safety Training (Chapter 17-1.6) on the first Tuesday of each month to learn safe and responsible food handling practices.

2026 MPO Pool Operation Class Schedule

Chapter 43A of the Dallas City Code requires all pool and spa facilities to have a certified Manager of Operations, with certifications renewed every two years. The Department of Code Compliance provides all training courses.

To register, submit the Manager of Pool Operations (MPO) Registration Form with your preferred class date. The fee is $50 per person (non-refundable), paid by check or money order to the City of Dallas.

Payments must be submitted or mailed to the Special Collections Division at 1500 Marilla St., Suite 2DS, Dallas, TX 75201. Payments are not accepted at class.

Classes run from 9 a.m.–1 p.m., with Spanish-language sessions available on select dates. To cancel or substitute, call (214) 671-2791 at least three business days before class.

What Residents Should Know About Mosquito Season:

Mosquito season in Dallas officially runs from May 1 through October 30, and the City of Dallas Code Compliance Services continues proactive mosquito surveillance and treatment efforts throughout the city during this time period. The City maintains approximately 90 mosquito trap locations strategically placed across Dallas to monitor mosquito activity and test for the presence of West Nile Virus.

When a mosquito sample receives a confirmed positive test result through Dallas County Health and Human Services or the Texas Department of State Health Services laboratory, public notification information is typically updated at least 24 hours in advance of any planned ground spray operation.

Ground spraying operations are generally conducted during evening and overnight hours, beginning around 9:00 p.m., when mosquito activity is at its highest. Operations are carefully coordinated to account for environmental and public safety considerations. Spraying is not conducted during rain or high wind conditions, near bodies of water, or when residents and pets are present in treatment areas.

Residents are also encouraged to remember the Four Ds of mosquito prevention:

Drain standing water around homes and businesses • Dusk and Dawn are peak mosquito activity times • Dress in long sleeves and light-colored clothing when outdoors • DEET and other EPA-approved insect repellents should be used as directed.

Residents may also request placement on the City’s “Do Not Spray” list for properties where treatment is not desired along the property boundary.

Why doesn’t the City spray mosquitoes on request? 🦟

Mosquito control is based on science, not service requests. We only conduct mosquito spraying when trap data shows:
✅ A mosquito trap tests positive for a mosquito-borne disease (such as West Nile virus), or
✅ A trap captures high numbers of disease-carrying mosquitoes over multiple weeks.

The best way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate standing water around your home each week. Empty buckets, bird baths, pet bowls, clogged gutters, old tires, and anything else that collects water. No standing water means fewer mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes don't respect property lines, so neighborhood-wide prevention makes the biggest difference.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, traveling, trying new restaurants, and finding opportunities to relax and recharge. I also enjoy learning new skills and staying active whenever I can.

Code Cares Initiative

Sometimes the biggest impact comes from lending a helping hand. We recently spoke with Dallas resident Ms. Huntington about how she benefitted from receiving assistance through Code Compliance Services and what that support has meant to her.

When health challenges made it difficult for this lifelong Dallas resident to maintain her property, Code Compliance Services partnered with community leaders to help. We asked her to share her side of the experience, what the support meant to her, and why it made such a difference.

Interview with Ms. Huntington:

Q: What do you enjoy most about living here?

A: My independence, the trees, and my good neighbors.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your connections to the community?

A: Long time since being a little kid, Dallas was always home because my grandparents were among the original homeowners here.

Q: What challenges were you facing in maintaining the property?

A: My poor health hasn't allowed me the mobility that I would like and my limited resources have been spent on medication and doctor's visits so I'm really grateful for the help of my fellow citizens.

Q: How did you feel when you learned the team would be helping you?

A: I was grateful for the response and Councilman Maxie's efforts to get me hooked up with the help I need.

Q: What does this assistance mean to you?

A: Personally, it means the world to me to be a good neighbor and to feel like I'm still a valued member and respected member of the community despite my low income in my infirmities I'm grateful.

Q: Is there anything that you would like to say to the teams that assisted you with this project?

A: Thank you bunches, and hugs around the neck. God bless.

Keep Southern Dallas Beautiful: Volunteer Community Service Cleanup Event : August 8

Behind every major event is a team helping keep your food safe. Ever wondered who they are?

Most residents never think about it, but behind every restaurant and food vendor tent, the City of Dallas Consumer Health Division is quietly at work.

Before the FIFA Fan Festival opened, our team completed more than 200 routine inspections, checking food temperatures, handwashing stations, and sanitation practices at each vendor. We also participated in more than 50 coordination meetings with partner agencies to help ensure every safeguard was in place before the first fan arrived.

The result was zero reported foodborne illness concerns during the entire event. That did not happen by chance. It happened through strong partnerships with the FDA, USDA FSIS, Texas HHS, Dallas County HHS, and hundreds of vendors who treated food safety as a shared priority.

This is what the Dallas Code Compliance Services does every day, often unseen. We connect with partners, collaborate with businesses, and communicate so public health protections work quietly in the background. We are proud of every team member who made it possible.

Cleaner neighborhoods start with action. Our Nuisance Abatement team, alongside Dallas Water Utilities, the Marshal's Office, and Sanitation Services, removed 916.97 tons (1,834,146 pounds) of illegally dumped debris from properties on Riverwood Road near the Trinity River in District 8.

This priority cleanup helps restore the area and improve quality of life for the community.

Code Compliance Services frontline employees joined Director Christopher Christian for Coffee with the Director, an employee listening session focused on open dialogue, questions, and feedback. The event provided an opportunity for staff to connect directly with leadership, share perspectives, and engage in meaningful conversation while enjoying coffee and donuts. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the session a success.
